Re: 1977 Bayliner quartermaster worth the trouble?

so managed to get the boat onto lake Castaic last week, which did involve a lot of work due to their "clean and dry" rules. But i couldn't have been happier with the performance of the boat. Started first time and up onto the plane (so long as my mate sat in the bow). I did have to keep the throttle pretty much maxed out to stay on the plane however, i could nudge the revs down a little, but any more than that and she'd start to come down. The engine temp was up there on the plane but never got to maximum. I did notice a little oil collecting on the side of the engine, but i'm not sure if this was coming from the dipstick area.
Anyways the main question at this point is what prop can could i buy to get more top speed so i can cruise with slightly less revs? can i buy stainless for this old 280 outdrive. If my friend sat in the back with me the boat would not get on the plane. Probably trim tabs would help but a shame to drill more holes if a better prop might solve the issue. Thanks for any prop suggestions and where to buy ......cheers.

Good looking boat.
The water coming out is too much, most likely the bellows is ripped open. The Volvo bellows has a pretty small hole, mine does not drip nearly that much when using a bucket.

Don't waste money on a prop unless you want a spare. It's a 4-cylinder and won't go any faster.

Just had another thought...a new prop is a good excuse to go boating again!

I did notice when I took the boat out of the lake, water drained constantly out of the weep hole in the bellow for quite a while. Don't see any tear, maybe something torn inside the bellow. I've no idea what goes on in the bellow.

That sounds normal, it is a very small hole and takes a long time to drain when pulling it out of the water. Nothing goes on inside the bellows, it just connects the exhaust pipe from the transom to the exhaust passageway on the outdrive. That way it sends the exhaust and noise out below the waterline.

Welcome to the boat world!!! You have a bayliner similar to mine. The volvo 4 cl. Engine is very friendly and easy to repair. You need a prop 15x17 or 15x19 all depends how your engine runs. In the water you don't want more than 4600 rmp at max. Keep it lower the rpm, your engine will last longer. Also I notice you have problems to get plane. I will take a picture of what I did to my boat.

No Title

Same boat, 4 years older, a few more wrinkles and we moved to Oregon. I'm guessing I didn't winterize the boat properly. How much damage have I done? Looks like a freeze plug has pushed out??? How should intackle this. The engine did start right up before it leaked water and I switched it off. Also I have a lot of gas dropping from the carberators? Advice on how to proceed much appreciated.
