The only thing the rectifier does is convert the AC voltage from the stator to DC for battery charging.

I think your problems lies in the issue of the boat setting for two years. Your carbs likely need overhauled to get the varnish out of them. Easy way to find out, next out, take a spray bottle of premix with you. When you go to full throttle, shoot some premix into the carbs. Engine should pick up rpm.

I have just started to working on the same motor and ran into the same problem. Although mine had not been started since 1980ish I first addressed the carbs. After that I found the problem in the ignitions grounds. After several hours with a dremel and wire brush on all the ground connections it help then the sync corrected it completely. I have read seveal post on the net with this motor all

sorry hit the wrong key. Anyways a mass majority of the post either a gound corrotion problem or carb problem fixed the issue. I am assuming the motor runs fine on the ears but under any load (ie prop in the water) will stall out. I really noticed a difference in the spark before and after I cleaned all the grounds. Don't give up on it there has been several times I almost blamed this problem on a stator or some other thing that would cost money but later found it was an up keep issue.
