1977 Evinrude 115 lower unit wont take lube

i just drained out the old gear lube and it was mostly water :facepalm: but it hasnt been like that long cause i checked it last week and it was fine, then took it out this past weekend... i only got about 2 cups of lube out of it after letting it drain all night. i was trying to change it today and it wont take more than a half quart and its not coming out of the top screw hole...im not sure if there could be a blockage or what?

What screws did you remove? Both slotted or one slotted and one Philips?

both slotted, the one all the way at the bottom of the lower unit and the one near the top

There's nothing but open space, gears, shafts and bearings in the cavity. Hard to imagine anything short of a dead cat in there blocking anything.

i just have no idea why it would take the fluid... it took a half quart and thats it

Do you have the engine completely tilted down (vertical)?

well if your really stuck try filling the top with the plugs out...if it comes out the bottom then u know theres nothing blocking it...sounds strange tho maybe try some compressed air in the bottom see if it blows out the top?

good idea, i didnt even think of that. ill pull the plug tomorrow morning to drain whats in it now and try the air and filling from the top when i get home from work

Filling from the top, you will not get anything in.
Buy a nipple that fits into the lower fill/drain hole and a plastic hose.
Make it in a big U and use that to fill through. You will be able to see the oil level by looking at the hose as level in hose should be same as level inside.
If you do not get the wanted quantity inside, leave the upper vent screw out and let be over night to see if changed. If filling to quick, you may not get the space where the shift rod goes filled up as well as the space between pinion and upper bearing.

bought a little pump that fits on the bottle at a local auto store and it worked, thanks for all the help guys!
