My trim unit is leaking down real slow.. I changed the fluid in it last year. There was some water in it at that time due to a bad line. It sat for 8 years prior to that. I put some soap bubbles aroud the fittings to check for leaks but found nothing. Is it possible there still some water in the system?? I also was told to use derexon III tranny fluld. Thanks!!!!!

They're not awfull particular on what kind of hydraulic fluid you use. ATF should be fine. Make sure your manual relief valve is snug. It may need replacing. If you let the unit drain thru that valve and refill the system a few times after running it up and down several times between, you should be able to get rid of most of the water in 2 or 3 changes.

That's usually caused by a faulty relief valve that's located under the oil pump.

However, before taking the unit apart, remove the curled oil line that is connected to the bottom of the center tilt cylinder and plug the hole in the tilt cylinder with a proper fitting.

If the engine still leaks down slowly, the tilt cylinder is at fault. If it doesn't leak down, the relief valve is at fault.

Perhaps Mr Reeves can explain just how removing that curled line is possible. I have had my unit removed from the motor, used a torch on the area around the threaded fittings, rounded off the nuts although the only wrench used was a flare nut wrench, and have yet been able to get either the top or bottom nut to move at all. In the bitter end, vise grips would not even budge those fittings.
Prior to that effort my dealer had advised me against trying to remove it. He told me that if I did get it off, it was twice as difficult to get it back on. Boy, he was correct!........piniongear

Pinion.... I've never used a torch on those fittings, and your mention of it is a first for me. I have no idea why either of those fitting would be that tight other than being subjected to salt water corrosion internally.

At any rate, apparently all that is left to try is vice grips.... but I'd strongly suggest that when replacing that line, install a new one.
