I was told the motor i bought was a 115 but it has an 85 cover. The motor looks all original but has been painted and i see no id tag. How can i figure out which model i have. Also i have trouble keeping the motor running at low rpm but runs great at higher speed. Also i was wondering if i need to go up in pitch on the prop. I have no tach and the motor is on a 1973 Bayliner tri hull.

The model number should be on the transom clamp. There should also be a welsh plug on the block about the size of a quarter which will have the model number stamped into it.
You need to do some basic checks for the idleing problem, spark, compression and fuel delivery.
You are going to have to find out what RPM you are running at WOT to determine proper prop size.
You need to get the engine running properly first.

Thank you sir. I will look for these two items to find the #. I am in the process of also getting a tach and gps for the boat so i will know soon about the RPM at WOT>

model identification 2.jpgMany of the cowlings are interchangeable for a number of years, so it's not unusual to see the wrong cowling. Usually, someone puts a higher hp cowling on a lower hp engine when it's up for sale. You can confirm the actual hp and year of the block by the model number on the casting plug on top of the engine. See pic.
