1977 Evinrude 15 HP - Electric Starter Conversion?

I have seen electric starting motors listed in the parts manual for my 1977 Evinrude 15 HP (Model: 15704M) but looking at where the starter would mount, it does not look like there would be enough room for the starter. Does anyone know if an electric starter will actually fit on this motor?

Then of course if the starter will fit, can I buy a wiring harness? Does the motor have and alternator or generator which will charge my battery/

Thanks,
Brian Chernish

Indeed, the motor was available with electric starting and alternator. It was model # 15754M. There also was an electric start kit available for installing on rope start motors. But the kit does not include an alternator. It does include all the cables and stuff necessary for installation. I probably have the kit number someplace if I look hard enough.

No Title

Well I guess I don't have the 1977 kit, but here is the 1978. Most likely the same, but be careful.

You need a parts motor with factory electric. Look at 9.9s as well.

Search leeroys ramblings. There is a ton of information you may find helpful including pictures. Best of luck. Rick.

A parts motor is best. The starter bracket is the exhaust cover which you will need to find. You will also need to find the flywheel which is different and the neutral safety switch and starter button. Here are pics of my 77 model. If you want to charge the battery the whole stator assembly needs to be changed. In 1977 through the early 80s the charge coils and ignition pick up are one molded unit. In later models the charge coils and ignition pick up are separate. S4010463.JPG S4010457.JPG S4010459.JPG S4010465.JPG

Pic #1 shows the push button starter switch.
Pic #2 shows the starter and bracket
Pic #3 is the neutral safety switch
Pic # 4 shows the the terminal bar and rectifier assembly.
There is NO starter solenoid on these.
I picked up a parts motor for $80 and sold the electric start for $250 dollars complete.

^^Good pics. That e.s. flywheel with the ring gear is by itself worth the $80 flyingscott paid for the parts motor, give or take. Hard to find, at least when I needed one. That front mount for the stop button is also an add-on (can be part of the the remote kit -- remote throttle cable placement forces you to move button.)

The extra brackets on mine are for the remote kit so you can ignore those. I took that pic because the the starter button is the black round one facing the pic. If you want to get a stator, I will try to get a pic of that tomorrow and CDI Electronics makes it after market. You can also retro fit the newer style stator assembly and buy just the charging coils probably cheaper. You can also use the parts off of a 1974-76 model except for the flywheel and ignition.
