1977 Evinrude 6 hp armature plate seems sticky sometimes

Tiller ( throttle ) handle turns hard sometimes. When I turn it down to slow or idle speed and let go of the handle, it tends to want to keep turning all by itself all the way to the stop position and it shuts itself off. Please help, what is happening? Can anyone tell me what I can do to correct this ?

Not sure I understand. It's difficult to turn or it just slowly works its way shut if you let go while it's at smallish throttle openings?
My '84 model does that. Darned nuisance. The 8Hp, and maybe the 6hp as well, later had a clamp on the tiller handle to stop it.

I cant find a diagram of the linkages on the '77 model but I "fixed" mine by increasing the friction on a pivot point in the linkages with a fibre washer

I suspect that you or someone else had removed and installed the ignition coils, and if so, have set them incorrectly so that the flywheel magnets are grabbing them, turning the armature plate to a retarded timing position.

(Magneto Coil Alignment)
(J. Reeves)

To align the coils properly, have the metal vertical portion of the coil yokes aligned with the inside edge of the bevel that exists on the top portion of the aluminum seat upon which the coils sit. This creates the proper distance between the coils and the flywheel magnets. Faulty alignment creats friction and the yokes of the coils heat up, turn blue and expand.

Joe,
I can see why everyone treats your answers with such respect! I had no idea that would happen if the coils were a little off! Thanks, as that answer helps me, too.

Well the flywheel has never been off mine so if thats the cause it was wrongly assembled when built! I cant feel any indication of contact between the magnets and the coils.

Once the throttle is open much more than fast idle it stays where it's put.

Ocassionally it feels like the throttle handle will bind up near half throttle. Also, when you let go of the throttle handle at or near slow idle it wants to turn all by itself the rest of the way to the off position, then shuts down. I noticed the armature plate shaking back and forth alot too. I was just suspecting this is the problem area, I'm open for suggestions. Please Help?

If the armature plate is shaking an unusual amount, it is either loose (worn) or broken. OR, as Joe suggests, the coils are dragging. If the plate is loose and flopping around too much, that also lets the coils drag as the magnet sucks them to one side.

There is a friction plug in the twist grip to make it stay put. Is it in there? But that won't cure the problems I just mentioned.

The armature plate should turn freely should have no more than perceptible vertical movement and no sideways slack. Anything else as FR says points to wear or something broken. Similarly the flywheel should have no lateral movement, just a tiny amount of end play

I have now found the diagram of the tiller and linkages. Totally different to mine! But you should check each part for free operation without undue slackness.

As far as I can see there is no adjustable friction control just a friction block, with a spring pressing on it , in the twist grip.

Drawing of all the bits here: "http://12.2.215.22/Scripts/ImgServ.exe/convert?ilFN=e%3A%5Cwebcat%5Cimages%5C41%5C281049%5C08.TIF&ilSC=100&ilIV=0&ilBR=0&ilIF=G&ilRE=8"

but see the brp parts catalog for the drawing and descriptions. "http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e"

(Magneto Armature Plate)
(J. Reeves)

If the armature plate has a a loose fitting, wobbling motion (the plate that the points, coils etc are attached to), it is usually caused by a slightly worn support ring. This allows the point setting to change erratically as the armature plate turns.

The cure is to remove the armature plate so that the support which is attached to the powerhead with 4 screws is visible. Then, with a screwdriver and hammer, or some tool of your choosing, and looking straight down at the support ring, make an indentation at what would be called the 12, 3, 6, and 9 O'clock positions. Install the armature plate and check for a smooth turning wobble free movement.

You may need to do that procedure a few times to obtain the proper fit (not too tight, not too loose), but it's worth the effort.

Use a small amount of anti corrosive grease between the aluminum ring and the brass support plate and also on the brass bushing of the armature plate when all is well.

No points, its a CD system i think you will find!

Yep, that's a solid state ignition setup on the 1977. I was thinking 76 for some reason.
