1977 Evinrude 70hp Model 70773S pictures/questions

Recently bought a boat with a rebuilt 1977 Evinrude 70hp Model 70773S. The motor was not stock, not sure if the controls were original to the hull or mated with the motor.

The bottom cylinder has a leak it seems. It is not moist to the touch so not sure if it is from before the work.

Can you guys take a peek and let me know if the motor looks good or not? Also, you pre mix gas with this gas correct? I see no reservoir for oil unless someone can point that out as well.

By the pictures it looks pretty clean. You might check the spark plugs and make sure they are tight. What makes you think the engine is not stock? That engine uses premix gas, must mix oil with the gas in the tank, so there is no oil reservoir.

Good to hear.

My buddy who owned it for a short time before me bought the engine used and installed it himself. I need to ask him about the controls.

I cant get the control lever to stand 90 degrees upwards in what should be neutral. The only way I can start the engine is to open the controller up and push that button down on the neutral start switch assembly(#68).

From what I can tell the throttle cam (#31) should push in the switch when the throttle lever is at 90 degrees allowing the engine to start.

When I push in the key for choke the butterflies on the carbs open up fine. When I manually engage the switch assembly and turn the ignition the engine fires up nice and quick (with muffs). I have a feeling all my problems are either in the remote control assembly, the cables, or linkages.

When I put it back together I am going to take special note to make sure that the throttle lever roller (#20) mates properly with the pin that sits inside of it from the throttle lever assembly (#65). I have a suspicion the roller was not seated outside the pin that carries in on #65.

I did not completely tear it apart as I only needed access to the neutral switch.
