I need to replace a bad coil on my motor and am not sure which kind to order. I see that there are 2 options available. There is the OEM coil that is obviously identical to the ones I have on my motor.

And this coil is also listed for my 1977....

The Sierra coil looks nothing like my OEM coil, but states it comes with a universal mounting bracket.

Are both coils equal in quality and reliability?

Am I likely to be able to find a "universal coil" locally...and if so, what store would carry them? NAPA? I don't have any marine dealers near me, so that's not an option.

You could try NAPA as I believe they handle marine parts. I still like my good old OEM parts tho'.

OEM coils are around $50 bucks while the CDI are $30.

NAPA didn't have them and/or couldn't get them.

Boats dot net has the OEM coils for a tad over $34 plus shipping......you might want to add some general maintenance items to the order while your at it......water pump kit, carb kits, anodes etc.....stuff you will probably be needin anyway.

Thanks.
Just changed impeller last night. Do I need sacrificial anodes for freshwater? Carb kits will be a future project...all floats etc are plastic and look new, gaskets looks great.

Looks like I'm probably going the OEM coil route....but I'm still curious as to whether the universal coils are of the same quality or better than OEM.

If you run mostly in freshwater and the existing anodes are good leave them be.....it can be a bonus to have a fresh water pump kit and a carb kit or two on the shelf......your call though.

How long is a piece of string?.....personally i would choose OEM over aftermarket ones when the pricing is so close.....the OEM coils at boats dot net are a bargain imo.
