HELLO EVERYONE,
I have an 1977 85hp outboard engine that just will not start. The starter turns and everything, but it just seems like it's not getting any fire at all. Can anyone give me any advise on getting this engine to start? I would surely appreciate it. Arthur_anderson77@yahoo.com

Re: 1977 EVINRUDE 85 HP MODEL 85793 WILL NOT START

yesterday I poured a little gas in the Carb and she fire up for about 3 second. I also noticed that the adapter that screws into the gas tank is like striped or something because you can take your hand and jiggle it. Would this be the main reason there's not gas going to the Carb. I pumped up the primer and it would start. It only started when I put the fuel in the carb. Can someone give me a little advice.

when you pump up the bulb does it get firm and stay firm or does it lose pressure? and also just to touch all the bases, have you overhauled the carbs on it?

Jal, there are three or four things that come to mind for losing bulb pressure:

air leak in bulb or fuel lines, especially where things connect

the needle valves in the carbs should be seating when you squeeze the bulb till it's firm

if the fuel pump's going bad it'll cause loss of pressure

air leaks go unnoticed usually we assume it's something else wrong. keep in mind tho the bulb will soften some when the motor's running, it shouldn't when it's not running
