The correct champion plug, I believe ql77jc4's work well. If you are not aware of the stat condition replace it, I had a guy bring me an 81 last year and it was running perfect. He took it out and blew the headgasket, the stat broke on his first trip out.

Re: 1977 evinrude 9.9 water pump problem

There are a couple of things come to mind.

As Will Bark said (and being a mechanic this is sometimes hard to accept) that white looking oil out of the exhaust and hub area IS nothing more than unburned oil. I rebuilt my lower unit twice before learning back in '77; gas was blended differently than the 87 octane today. Which brings me to my next point.

Use only non-ethanol fuel w/ a good 50:1 oil. Where I fish in central MN, the local Holiday station sells 92 octane which is non-ethanol. It helps reduce that unburned oil leaking out after a day of fishing.

If you could borrow a laser temp gun it would be helpful to confirm that the head is running at 140* or 165* after running under load on the lake. When you were told to watch the water flow (I'm assuming from the person you bought the motor from) I'm also going to assume that person may have removed the lower unit and may not have gotten the water tube inserted correctly. Consequently, you would only get some water, not full flow from the water pump to the powerhead. You should have a good flow of water from the exhaust housing port (and the telltale) when you operate the motor at something near mid-range. And the water should be 120* or so, never hot.

Hope this helps;

thank you gentlemen, i will get a laser temp gun and check that out. yes, all info came from the previous owner. he did have the lower end taken apart when he replace the water pump impellar. i will get a new thermostat and replace the plugs. hopefully the compressed air will fix the low water flow. im hopeing i dont have to take the lower end apart to check the water tube. thanks again.

so i tried the compressed air several times and the longer weedeater string several times and nothing is any better. i susppose i will have to wait till i get the thermostat and put that in and possibably check out the water pump impellar. im drawing blanks now, worse than before.

When you have your tstat out use the weedeater string and run it as far as you can in the passages. If you are looking at the back of the engine your telltale should be on your right. I took the hose off mine and while running it flushed itself of sand/mud from when I hit bottom running shallow. You might run wire or weedeater string in then as it will have a stronger flow.

I GOT IT!!!! i got the thermostat replaced, it fixed my water problem. But now I've decided to work on the choke problem. It just hangs there, connected to nothing. And maybe after that work on the starting thing. It starts but it sure takes a while. Any quick checks I could do?
