Thanks, looks like you are both right. I looked up the old OMC parts and it looks like they never made a bracket to fit this style of tilt unit to a long shaft.
I'm going to try to modify the lifting bracket to fit my motor b/c the pump works and the wiring is simple. I doubt anyone still runs a short shaft 65 horse so don't mind stretching the bracket to fit a l/s.
I like the simplicity of this style lifting unit rather than trying to find one that fits inside the stern brackets, then having to take mine apart after running in the ocean for 30 years, etc. I think I can mount the lower bracket on the engine mounting bolts so shouldn't need to drill any holes in the transom. If anything breaks all the manual lift stuff is still in place so I won't be stuck.
If I can get it to work I will post up a picture in case anyone else has the same problem. Thanks again for the help.
