I'm a newbie here so take it easy on me. I just got my first boat and it has a 1977 Evinrude 115 O/B. I need to find out where I can get a wiring diagram for this motor. All the wires under the cover are completly disconnected and I need to know where they hook up. Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

Break down and buy a factory service manual specific to your year and model. It will have the diagram and photos of how it is supposed to look. Ken Cook Co is the official supplier of them, and holds the copyrights. Or, keep and eye out on e-bay. They show up there all the time at a good price.

I can help you if you PM me with an e-mail address. I'll attach a diagram.

Wiring harnesses that are completely disconnected usually are suspect. Do continuity checks on all the wires. If you find that the harness is compromised, a harness from some other motors will be compatible. The diagram will tell you what harnesses are interchangeable.

At some point, you WILL need a manual.:D However, the wiring diagram that I have will get you started and fill the time waiting for a manual.

I bought a manual online and looked it over, but the diagram doesn't really fit my engine. It was for an 85hp engine. Thanks for the quick responses and suggestion.

I'm an electrician and should be able to figure out where everything goes once I see a diagram of how the contacts for the switch and everything else works. I plan on completely doing away with the harness I have right now and rewiring the whole thing. I'll probably hard wire it with some sort of quick disconnect or something in case I have to swap motors.

Re: 1977 Evinrude Wiring

I have a '77 35hp and 2 years ago I had to rewire everything under the cowl. Insulation was broken something terrible. Seems they had a bad year for wire that year. Anywho, I used a trailer connector on the outside of the motor so that I could unplug and remove motor without removing cowl.

That was my plan if I couldn't find another harness.

So did I but I re-thought it. YOu might want to also when you find the new motor cable assembly is $271.01. CDI Electronics makes one for $115.28, but have no idea who good it is. Otherwise, CDI makes good products. BRP part number is 581721.

Edit: There's another wiring cable, P/N 388181, $222.89. I'm not sure if this contains duplicate wiring or is in liue of the other cable assembly.

Re: 1977 Evinrude Wiring

i bought a cdi harness for my 60 hp 1981 and it was fine it was made factory lengths and had good sheilding and shrink wrap on connections, very professional looking, but if you have a connetor for the motor diconnect around and lots of the pin type connectors and lots of wire of various colors and lots of connectors and shrink tubing and all other electrical type stuff you can make it for a lot less. I weighed the fact that i would have to buy all the wire and connectors and would end up with lots of extra and then the time to assemble. I figured that for 30-$40 more i could buy one that was OE specs and slap on in a few minutes when arrived. I used ebasicpower.com, i boats did not carry or was out of stock of the one that i needed and ebasic was cheaper and on orders over $100 shipping was free. Mine was about $95 so i bought a thermostat to get the free shipping and if you look and what the shipping was going to cost on the $95 order i basically got a thermost for like $3 more than if i just paid to ship the harness. Think about it like i got a $5 discont on the thermostat, b/c once i reache $100 shipping was free. Man was that a rant, oh well i got carried away on my good deal!

I'm not sure that I'm not missing parts off this motor. I haven't taken anything off the motor yet. In the pictures attatched, is this where the rectifier is suppose to be? If so, I think I'm missing parts.

You are missing the terminal block and rectifier in the photo. Looks like whoever stripped it took the engine wiring harness with the red plug. I don't see the red cable from the starter solenoid to the starter or the fuse holder either.

I think the powerpack wires are hanging there at the back, so you are probably missing that, too.

The ignition system, harness and electronics for the 1977 85HP and 115HP should be virtually identical. Check the parts manuals here:

Re: 1977 Evinrude Wiring

I just went and bought a rectifier. Where should the power pack be located? I do have the red connector for the harness. Its not shown in the picture but it is there. As far as the terminal block goes, I plan on just splicing the wire together. On the diagram I have, it doesn't say anything about a power pack. What is this piece with an arrow pointing to it? It has a ground and a power wire, but this is one of the wires that I don't know where it goes.

One more thing. Where is the neutral safety switch on this motor?

thats a clean looking 77 model. The arrow looks like its pointing to the choke solenoid

In the first pic, is this what your calling the power pack? The second pic is another shot of the wires that are disconnected. Let me know what you'll think. Thanks.

Re: 1977 Evinrude Wiring

That is the powerpack centered between the two cylinder banks.

The earlier motors in the 73-77 series had a a neutral safety switch hooked to the engine behind the shift lever, the later ones did not. My 1976 115 only has the switch in the control. My 1973 135HP has both.

Did you run a compression test to see if the engine is good?

This is what the engine mounted neutral switch looked like:

Re: 1977 Evinrude Wiring

I don't have an engine mounted neutral safety switch. I finally got me a stator and everything else I was missing, but now I have to figure out what size the bolts that hold the stator in place. Would anyone happen to know off the top of their head? Thanks.

The item you are attempting to source is P/N 317716. They are actually labeled as screws. Some of these fasteners are rather specific. I'd rely on the OMC schematic and get the parts from a dealer. Go to the BRP website, http://epc.brp.com and follow the prompts it will give you all the info as to parts and their order number.

Re: 1977 Evinrude Wiring

I went down to vatozone and got me some bolts for the stator and put everything back together. I go to crank it and the damn gear on the end of the starter is the wrong size. It's too big for the flywheel so it just grinds the bottom side of the flywheel. The guy I got the boat from told me that was the starter for the engine. It's brand new so maybe I'll be lucky enough to just exchange it. If not, is it possible to just replace the gear on the end of the starter?
