1977 Inline Six Trigger Question

A couple of years ago my trigger went out and I put a used trigger assembly in from motor being parted out. I was told it was very hard to rebuild the trigger assembly and it would be better to put in a used one. Well, it has now gone out again. Would I be better off putting an aftermarket trigger in this time and how hard is it to rebuild the complete assembly. Any help you can give will be great.

I would buy a new trigger these are not expensive. I would get a CDI or simular aftermarket trigger for this motor rebuild not a good Idea. How did you find out he trigger was bad?

I had it tested at the repair shop. I may not have been clear with my question. I have a distributor CD ignition on my motor. I put a complete distributor with the trigger in it the last time from a old motor. I was thinking about replacing the trigger in my distributor this time. I was not sure about what is required to replace the trigger in my distributor.

Rebuild trigger assemblys are available on the web for $200 or so. To install one, you need to pull the rotor shaft out of your distributor and install it into the new trigger assembly. It is not hard to do, but I recommend a Merc manual. Be careful not to break or damage the rotor. They are not replaceable.

I have found several places that have the trigger but have not found the trigger assembly. What is the advantage in getting the assembly?

The trigger is ONLY available as an assembly, it is often just called a trigger, however, it is the distributor casing with the components sealed in epoxy resin. The CDI unit comes with a different trigger wheel than original. Perhaps that is what you are seeing as an assembly.

I guess I'm confused, what I'm finding listed as a trigger assembly is like what is pictured in the link below. Are we talking about the same thing? I could not find a listing for my motor here on iboats so I used this as an example.

OK I see the confusion, that is indeed a trigger, however it is for a later model merc with ADI ignition. yours has the distributor ignition and the trigger is built into the distributor body. I will try and find a pic for you.

Now I got it, I was not sure about all of the triggers I saw listed. Is there normally much problem getting the rotor shaft out of the assembly. It looks like once you got that done it should not be much of a problem. Thanks for the help guys.

It is fairly straight forward, there is a cir clip that holds the bearings in. Often it is corroded and will either break when you try to remove it or will have rotted off. I would suggest replacing the bearings and the c clip as long as you are in there. The rotor is integral to the shaft, and is no longer available, and pricey if you can find one.

Being less than $100 more on the new assembly pluss trigger get the new one I hate buying someones junk they die in a year or 2.
