So I noticed while reinstalling the flywheel, it has 2 key-ways.
I saw no mention of this in the manual , and guessed to the proper installation.
Turns out I guess wrong and the OB didn't start.
I removed flywheel and changed positions, and it started right up!

Whats this about?

I also think my shift lever is way off.
I can adjust the detent rod, but I don't think that will adjust the shift position.

Thoughts?

is this a long shaft engine? Maybe someone put a longer shaft on it and never bothered to extend the shift linkage when they swapped all the parts. Only other thing I could think would be bent linkage. Also maybe the shift lever was moved and not placed back in the correct postuion and this is causing it to be off. Personally if it works I would leave it alone.

ive never seen a flywheel with two key ways, but they do look to be at 90 deg apart??? was there a transition between ignition systems during that era???.....maybe some creative machining on a flywheel that wasnt right for the motor?

Perhaps.
Its a 1975 Block with a 1978(?) ignition system.
This required some custom mounting of the powerpack.

Crankshafts are the same all the way through, both low-tension mags and CDI. I've never seen a CD flywheel like that one with the CD stamped in it like that. Most I've seen have "CD FLYWHEEL" cast into it, further out from the hub. 1977 was the first year of the CD ignition, so perhaps your motor used an early casting for the flywheel and got machined incorrectly, then fixed? No real way to confuse the two flywheels as the low tension mags had one set of magnets, while the CD had two.
