DHP,
Thx for the response. I hope it is that simple. I was careful to take the wires off one at a time, but I guess it is possible to have gotten them crossed. I am unsure of how to deterine the firing order because I couldn't find reference of it in my service manual, but I did find a picture of the aft view of the engine. It appears in the picture that the two "inboard" coil's wires goto the two btm cyl., while the two "outboard" coil's wires goto the two top cyl. Could you please confirm? I did also find that the module I had never noticed for some reason before is the voltage regulator according to my manual. If the wires are correct, then this puts me back at wondering what the problem could be. I am puzzled because up untill the motor quit running completely it ran great and never gave me a problem, now that I finally have it running again it is backfiring. Any help will be greatly appreciated, I will be tinkering on it some more in the morning. Thx again

Shane

Follow this simple flow chart to determin the correct firing order... Take the cover off your power pack and locate the wire for ignition coil #1. Remove the wire from the pack and fish it back to the ignition coil it belongs to... Check that that coil is connected to the #1 Cylinder. There should be large numbers embossed on the aluminum head covers beside each one of the spark plugs to identify each cylinder number.
Once you've determined that that coil is connected to the #1 cylinder fish the wire back through and reconnect it to the power pack. Then continue on with cylinders 2 through 4 in the same manner. If you motor is backfiring at all it's mostly likely caused by crossed ignition wires and doing this one by one will help you resolve that easily.

If you payed a wrench to fix it - - demand that he do just that! Keep your wrenches in your tool box at this point.

Unless by chance the stock wiring to the coils on your motor has been changed (seems very unlikely) - it looks to me like you have the plug wires swapped on both the starboard and port banks. On these motors, the "inner" two coils go to the upper cylinders and the "outer" coils go to the lower cylinders. I'm sure if you swap your wires out your misfiring will go away.

All,
Thank you for all the replies. Sorry it has taken me so long to get back. You guys were right on. I had the wires crossed up. I went ahead and disconnected the plug wires and wires to the PP and redid them one by one. When I originally replaced the PP and Coils, I replaced the coils one at a time, and thought that I had been careful in not changing anyhting. Still not sure how I got things messed up, but I did. When I turned the key, it fired right up and purred like a kitten!!!! I felt like such an idiot....duh. I am just glad the motor is back running like a champ! In defense of the wrench, I didn't pay him to do the repairs. I merely paid him to diagnose the problem. When he said it was a bad PP, I decided to do that myself. Thanks again for all the great replies!!!! You guys never cease to amaze me...

Shane
Houston, Tx
