Hi, I recently bought a vintage Ebbtide with a 1977 Johnson 70 HP 2-Stroke 3 Cylinder and the throttle response is poor. It shifts into fwd / neutral / reverse without issue but the accelerator forwards is not too responsive. Sometimes it even cuts out. Any ideas and / or suggestions to remedy this would be very much appreciated!

Trouble shooting starts with a compression test.----Post your numbers.-----If the motor sat for some time with fuel in the carburetors they might be gummed up / plugged.----Clean them.[------And you need to install a new water pump impeller too.----Or at least test the overheat horn.

thanks! funny thing is that sometimes during full throttle it zipped across the water and felt great; then, after sitting for a while, it was back to normal. seemed like it needed to run for about ten minutes every time to get back to running smooth.

Strange response to post #2 in my opinion !
What I was hoping to relay was that the boat runs strong, I can tell the compression isn't an issue. I've cleaned the carbs and replaced the fuel line and filters. The water pump also seems to be strong but maybe it's failing? Maybe thermostats is sticky? Thanks for your help, I'm pretty new at this.

Okay, so what I getting from you are two different Stories. First you are implying it Never runs right, later it changes to "that the boat runs strong". It makes it difficult to offer meaningful Help when the Story changes. And the first who responded is one of those most Knowledgeable about those older engines
