I took my boat out today & it would not get on plane, 3000 rpm were the most & most of the time when pressed to full throttle it would die. I had changed plugs & had swapped my 2 metal fuel tanks for a plastic one. What do you think?

Good day john Lowe,

How old is your gas/fuel? If it wasn't treated with stabilizer it could be stale. Let me know though.

I had about 4 gallons left over in my 9 gallon tank but I thought I had treated it. I added 5 fresh gallons today to fill it up.

Fuel starvation, John.

Check the tank for vent restriction and restricted pickup, fuel lines and filter for air leaks or restrictions and, finally, your fuel pump.

Let us know what you find.

Re: 1977 Johnson 70 Won't Run

Today was first chance I had to check things out. Put the motor on the muffs & it appeared as if everything was fine. Idled ok, accelerated ok. One time I swicthed props after letting it sit for a little bit & it took a few times to start, but then after belching some exhaust, it ran ok. Thinking I'm going to have to take it to my local marine place & have them run it in the tank & see what happens before I go to the lake again or any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hmmmmm. I now think it is running on one or two cylinders at WOT.

Crank her up on the muffs again. Ignore the fact that it will sound great. Disable each spark plug, one at a time. If disabling a spark plug does not cause a drop in idle that cylinder is not making power. Check for a hot, blue spark about 7/16" to the block.

Squirt or spray some fuel into the carb for a dead cylinder that has spark.

If it picks up the idle rebuild your carbs.

Even if the above does not identify the culprit you could have a carb not providing fuel at WOT.

Rebuild them all.

Good luck. :)

Re: 1977 Johnson 70 Won't Run

I did notice one other thing that seemed odd to me. When the motor was at idle or fast idle, when I tilted trimmed motor up the rpm's increased more like normal but when the motor was trimmed all the way down, the motor ran rough, sometimes dying. Didn't know what this might indicate.
