I have a problem with my carbs squirting gas from the small holes on the side that look like carb jets. What are those for? overflow? It cranks and runs but gas constantly comes out of those. I have a couple of fire extinguishers handy, but need to get this fixed right away. This motor has been sitting for a few years and I just got it cranked today. Wonder if I need to rebuild the carbs? Or am I supposed to tighten the vent on the tank to cut back on the flow? Or is there an adjustment to back off on flow on the fuel pump? I don't know much about boat motors. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Re: 1977 merc 1150 carb question

Those are the backdraft jets and if you have fuel coming out them, the needles are not sealing properly (gum/varnish),floats are sticking on guide(gum/varnish),floats are damaged by ethanol and heavy/sinking or float level is set incorrectly on inlet...

Rob, Before you tear the carbs down, check them again. Sometimes the floats will clear up after fuel sits in them for a while (4-5 hours). If not any better, clean up the carbs. Use new gaskets, new inlet needles and seats and inspect and replace carb floats, as necessary.

Rob I asked the exact same question like last week. lol Looks like you and I are in the same boat. (pun intended lol) Anyway, read my thread. Lot's of good advice here. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=487816 Also if you need rebuild kits let me know. I found a store on ebay selling them for $14 +$5.20 s&h for our motors. Saved me a boat load! (pun intended again)
