1977 Merc 50 hp broken end cap

While replacing the trigger on my merc, the end cap broke. The break is where it keeps the trigger in line. With this piece gone will my trigger jump ship? I have reinstalled everything and moved my remote arm. Since the trigger is secured on the upper end cap and the spark advance lever would it work with out that piece? If you are wondering how this could happen, let's just say I did something stupid. Thanks for your input.

My advise is to replace the end cap.
