1977 Mercruiser Pre Alpha Drive

so my mechanic gave me a free upper freshly rebuilt. So last weekend i decided to swap the uppers. I bought a water pump kit and when i pulled the pump off thewas alot of lower unit fluid, when i move the shaft more oil comes out. So I called my mechanic and he said its the water pump base thats bad. Is this a pain to do or is it easy. I was told by him to make sure everything is clean and no debris. Because the case will be open and i dont want anything to go in there. has anyone done this?

Did ya drain the leg of gear oil before you took it apart?

Yes I did drain the unit befor i split the two. But i was tol that there should not be any lower unit fluid under the impeller. I picked up the waterpump base and im going to install tomorrow. Has any one did this? Is there info on the install

Did you pull the top vent plug before you drained it?

yes i pulled the vent plug on the drive when i drained the outdrive.
