1977 OMC 235 tilt won't work

I am in need of some help. I have a 1977 OMC 235 inboard motor with a tilt that won't work. I changed out the tilt motor and took apart the clutch and cleaned everything. When I try to raise or lower the motor nothing happens. Can anyone help me? Thanks for any information.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard Tom,.... Did ya bench test the replacement motor,..??

Is it gettin' Power,..?? a test light or multimeter is pretty much a Must have item...

Yes I did bench test the motor and it works and it's getting power.

When you hit the tilt switch can you hear any clicks, grunts or anything ??

I can hear the solenoid working(clicking)...The worm drive and all gears are in good condition

If you haven't already done it , you may want to check the sticky section , I know I've found a lot of really great info there its at the top of the threads , I'm new here , and had the same prob .... It's all about using your DMM and test test test

When you resealed the clutch pack, did you make sure to use two shims(gaskets) and not tighten the bolts on the cover down too tight? If you over tighten those 4 bolts, you can bind the clutch pack.

When I got the boat the owner told me the tilt was not working

With the tilt motor off, and the hammer coupling out - can you turn the worm gear shaft (flat tipped screwdriver'll do) and see the tilt gear turn outside the intermediate housing (you'll probably need to support the sterndrive and remove the tilt quadrant)?

Do you have any power coming out of the solenoids going to the tilt mtr ??

Great question! I just had a Merc tilt pump solenoid that 'clicked' when activated but there was no juice coming out the other side. I tore the solenoid apart and every thing looked pretty good. I cleaned the contacts and still no juice. I took it apart again and chucked up the armature, applied some coarse valve grinding compound and lapped it in to the field contacts. I put it back together and Voila! It worked.

Mind you, this was a lot of effort for a 26$ solenoid but I wanted to see what made it tick.

Good Job!! That's the way mechanics did things yrs ago rather than just replacing parts.
