For starters you most likely have a 302 motor. A 305 is a Chevy engine and OMC was using SBF's at that time. If you are sure that the sound is coming from the engine, not the outdrive, start by removing the belt from the alternator and seeing what happens. I have heard upper gear cases scream from lack of lubricant, so play close attention.

Upper unit was just rebulit and oil is good....Can I run the motor without the alternator belt??

Could it be the tappered roller bearing making the noise??

Thanks

alternator, water pump, tensioner pulley or power steering pump (if equipped- doubt it - not popular option in 1977)

the tapered roller bearing?
no tapered roller bearings on the engine - about a dozen tapered roller bearings in the outdrive - check fluid in intermediate, upper and lower to see how those are doing.

you can probably run briefly without an alternator or water pump belt - a minute max - watch the temp
