Re: 1977 searay sedancrusier

Hello,
Was able to spend 2-1/2 hrs on boat today

A so called mechanic had looked at engine and said it was trash. Was resigned to buying new engine. Decided it would be easyer to remove engine if I took the heads off before I tried to pull it. Would have to disassemble anyway to salvage and sale anything that was good on e-bay. Only removed one head today. Had to buy some Lequid Wrench for the other one. Two head bolts had good amount of rust on them. Hope its only from a blown head gasket. Engine looks like its an excellent canidate for rebuild. Will not realy know untell I get the other head off. Wish I had checked the compresion before I started removing bolts. Have my fingers crossed.

Wow, that bought me back to my 20s working on cars. Back then I had to buy junkers and fix them if a wanted to owen a car. Think I spent more time pushing then driving back then. Haven't seen push rods and pistons in over 20 years.

See Ya,

Clay

I am not sure I would take on a rebuild on that engine. You should look into how much it is to just buy a rebuilt engine vs rebuilding that one. My engine was far nicer than that one, and it was far cheaper to just find a rebuilt bottom end, then I picked up a set of remanned heads off ebay and it was about $600 or so cheaper than rebuilding mine. Remember all the machine work and parts needed to rebuild an engine. I honestly think that our machine shops around here are smoking crack on their prices, but I havent built an engine since the early 90s, maybe they are all expensive now.

Perhaps you should look for a donor boat with a running engine. It would also give you some parts to sell on ebay or CL.
Just another idea.

Re: 1977 searay sedancrusier

No work done. Spent last night and most of day in hospital. Inflamed pancrise, O.K. now. Wow that hurt, had to call 911

Will be looking into all options on engine. Money is going to play a part but kind'a like the idea of rebuilding engine my self. Enjoyed doing that from teens through late 30's. Right now I just need to get it out to work on the fiberglass. Wish I had a tree in the yard. Thought stripping it down to the block would give me more options. If I used a come-a-long and A-frame, that would be one ------ of a large A-frame. Was thinking of maybe building a wooden platform and using a car cherry picker. Any sugestions?

Clay

P.S. Does anyone know what size engine this is. It hase a 4.0 inch bore and somewere between 3.5 and 4.0 inch stroke. Will ask latter with more info in correct forume. Just thought I would ask real quick to see if anyone knows off hand.

CLAYAROBINSON,
Someone on here hired a wrecker for $50 to pull his. Might be a better option for you.

Re: 1977 searay sedancrusier

I looked into all those options when I pulled my engine. I ended up getting a tow truck to come out and pull my engine, then I got a buddy to let me use his tractor to put it back in.

An A-frame gets a bit costly when you figure all the wood and hardware to put it together. Remember it has to support that engine so you dont drop it through your keel. Lots of wood. And I allready have a come along. Oh and you have to store it after you are done.

I also thought about the platform idea, or backing up a pickup truck with the hoist on it, but you have to get the legs underneath the hull somehow. Wasnt feasable.

The other option is to find someone in your area with a large garage or barn or ??? with tall and strong rafters. I had one lined up but then on the day we needed to pull it he wasnt available.

Even if you strip it all the way down, it is still pretty heavy and its in an akward place to get ahold of it.

That was probably me. They charged me $65 to come out. Luckily it was ready to pull because after he got here he told us that $65 only bought us 15 minutes, and after that it was $25 per 15 minutes. So if you choose that option, make sure you ask before they show up, and have ready to pull when they get there.

Pulled other head today and a few more bolt-on items. Should be able to pull engine this weekend. May just use brute force and a littel brain power. Will have pics by end of weekend of pulled engine:) or hull repair project by transum. Wish me luck. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, have removed motor mount bolts and "transmition bolts" on top and sides, didn't find any on bottum. Are there any?. Am I missing somthing? Still seams to be attached. Should I start prying? Seam to remember something about having to pry apart transmitions on cars to loosen from alighnment pins O' so long ago.

Clay, I did see if you have already pulled the drive off or not. It needs to come out before the motor. Or at the very least it will make it much easier.

Re: 1977 searay sedancrusier

This is an I/O correct? we pulled mine with the bellhousing attatched and the drive still on. Putting it in you have to have the drive out though. You should be able to, once you start lifting, pull it slightly forward to clear the drive etc. Unless something is very differant than my Mercruiser, I cant imagine it being much differant. There are 4 lag screws on the motor mounts and 2 long bolts in the bellhousing going down. Once you get them out it should pop loose.

Re: 1977 searay sedancrusier

Interesting topics for today - I took out the second engine from my SRV240 today. Luckily, I have a large tree with a limb that points out at the perfect angle in my backyard that serves as my hoisting area.

I bought a cheap 2000lb winch with forward/reverse capability (not all have reverse) and raised it up high by standing on my flybridge and hooking it to a chain that I'd thrown over the limb. The winch isn't really supposed to be a hoist - something that I learned the easy way today on the internet and then the hard way actually doing it.

I had to cut out the whole engine, coupler, and sterndrive but cutting around them through the transom. This was because the sterndrive shaft has basically welded itself to my engine.

This results in a really tall thing to hoist up. I had just the winch going and was pulling it up when the winch slipped and the whole engine dropped like a rock into the boat. I am going to tell you - that is one tough boat. I think the hull is an inch thick. I ended up denting my gas tank and breaking off the valves but I think it's going fixable. Otherwise nothing else happened to the boat.

At this time i got a little scared of continuing to do what I was doing and decided to try calling around to see if I could find a shop to get the engine out. I called one place and the guy was a polite jerk - he told me that I could either have the tow truck come out to get it out or I could bring it in to the shop. I told him I wanted the cheaper way, and he replied that it wouldn't be cheap either way. He said $100 minimum and that probably was going to be too cheap. Keep in mind that all that had to happen was go up, move boat, go down onto the trailer. I told him no thank you, and went back to do it myself.

Last I did this I has used the come-along at first, and when I didn't have enough clearance to get over the boat, I'd bought a winch with *no reverse*. Of course, I didn't realize it at the time... So i decided to get the come-along back out again.

I brought the engine back up again a ways and then used my come-along to take the pressure off the winch. I used the come-along to go up as far as possible - the engine was tilted almost vertical with the sterndrive pointed towards the ground. I then used the winch to hike up the sterndrive end which made the whole thing level and gave me the clearance to get it out of the boat by drving the boat forward. I then released the winch and hooked it back up to the same location that the come-along was attached to and took the pressure off the come-along so I could unhook it - come-alongs are not good at releasing under pressure. After releasing the come-along, I was able to lower the engine to the ground.

Re: 1977 searay sedancrusier

No problem MATTSMALL1972,

Started building support to pull engine. Finished A-frame for one side. Will make a 3 foot free standing box and place on roof for other side. Will save on wood.:D So far haven't decided if I will use come-a-long. Not first choice do to problems in getting engine on ground after moving bout. Haven't figured that one out yet. Would love to use block and tackel if I had one. Guess I could use this as an excuse to get one. "Honey, it looks new because I just haven't needed to used it much since we got it a few years back".;) Probably won't fly, but will give it a try. Will let you kmow how it goes Bob. I did get the engine loose. All it needed was a light prying. I was just a littel hiestant to pry as I know very littel about pulling boat engines. When it came loose the left motor mount lags failed. Wood rotted away completely under fiberglass. I had removed bolts going into block and though it would just rest on top of mounts when I pryed it. Should have been pateint and waited till I had hoist set-up done. Hope nothing is bend. Camera battery went dead. Will have picks tomorrow.

MATTSMALL1972

Didn't notice at first. But after reviewing your picks closer I notice 2 small holes in transom. Don't overlook and/or blow them off. Thay might become a problem with bigger swells. :p;)

Re: 1977 searay sedancrusier

Specs on A-frame
11 ft tall with a 16 x 19 ft footprint
2 Brackets 1/2 angle iron cut to 4 inch lengths from work
All 4x4s are from a 12ft pallet from work.
2x4s and most bolts are left overs from other projects
Was lucky and able to use saw house on roof for support on one side
Son-in law had block and tackle. I guesse in-laws are good for somthing.

Close to finished with hoist set-up. Will have to replace 4x4 cross member with a 2x6. Don't think 4x4 will work (create wood isn't that strong and it's 12 foot long). The 4x4s for the side supports should be O.K. after I bolt on a few 2x4s over section with large through knot. Still need to bolts 4x4s at top by brackets (don't think the brackets secured with 5/16 x 2 inch lags will be strong enough). Better safe then sorry.

Was headed to hardware store to get 8" long bolts to tie 4x4s at top. and a few more 6 inch bolts. Had car problems on way to hardware store.:( Damaged struts, axel, CV jiont, tire, rim, and bend frame (unibody). Most likley totaled, it's a 1977 Torus. This may slow me done a littel this week-end, but even if it's not in Gods plan for me to pull engine this week-end, it's still in my planes. Like I told my freinds. Don't try and stop me. I'm doing this. And that still stands.

Total cost of A-frame

$10.00 for more nuts and bolts
$5 for 16 ft 2x6 cross member
$35,000 for new car

Total cost of A-frame $35,015 plus tax

This is costing much more then I expected to pull engine

Clay

P.S. Just remembers I forgot the pictures

Re: 1977 searay sedancrusier

Yahoo, Finished with hoist. Will be pulling engine after lunch.

And by the way. I resemble, mean, resent those comments people say about me having O.C.D. You can clearly see from the picture that I only used 2 not 4 lags on one of the brackets to hold the doubled-up 2x6 up right that I replaced the 4x4 with.

This having to replace the car may work out after all. My wife keeps saying "We are not spending money on a bigger truck!" When I try to tell here the Nisson isn't big enough for the boat.

God answers all our prayers. Just not always the way we want him to.

Wow your a-frame looks dangerous! But not too dangerous to not do it. :) I spoke too soon about the damage to my hull - the skeg from the sterndrive went straight through the hull and is still in there:

Oh well... make that a third hole that I need to be sure to not miss before I splash it. :)
