Looking great! I got a Wise seat with a hole in it. They sent me a whole other one and let me keep the damaged one. It was a $200+ bucket seat!

You're doing a great job, and I just wanted to say I like how you did your blue strip in the front by turning it back down into a point. Looks nice.

Re: 1977 Starcraft 14' Holiday Restoration has officially begun

thanks for everyones compliments .. it helps fuel the fire to keep going.

Two nights ago i pulled an ' all night after work till midnight " run on the boat ..

Windshield ( sooo heavy for a little boat, dang it ! ) installed .. CHECK
Carpet installed .. CHECK ( looks dark, its not that dark, dunno why it looks like that )

DSC01476.jpg

bilge pump with custom bracket installed .. CHECK

DSC01477.jpg

After having glued the carpet in, i have to trim it out tonite. Tucking to hide edges, and i bought aluminum angle to trim out the bilge and rear area tonite ..

also i have to cut out the outboard shim from cutting board i purchased. This is the trick others have used and has worked well. Plastic cutting board doesn't rot !

then i have to lastly cut out a new outboard remote mounting board to rivet back into place. The original has seen better days.

I replaced the nameplate last night and am having a local trophy shop make up an aluminum coast guard capacity plate to replace the foil sticker i painted over ( oops, this will look way better anyhow)

I called the place who sand blasted my trailer for me. They are going to fabricate a new transom cover across my transom . The factory cover was beat up real bad and broken in the center from the last outboard that was mounted. Worst part is i cant mount the outboard until the transom cover is in. And i cant do the wiring until the outboard is on. So after i tie up loose ends tomorrow, i'm temporarily done until the transom cover is made and installed ..

"Faster than a speeding bullet". Man, you're putting me to shame. Good idea on the pump bracket, I may do something similar for mine. Can you tell me the name of the shop that's making your capacity plate for you? When you get it, can you post a photo of it? Thanks.

Very nice work chrisp, I like that paint scheme. The colors look better than original, I agree.:)

You should be thrilled with how that 50hp does on that boat. Good luck with the splash!

Awards by Walshes, Cohoes, NY

http://awardsbywalsh.com/

It's a very large trophy shop which also specializes in custom mugs, plates, uniform printing, awards, pens, pencils .. many kinds of custom engraving etc .. it's a REAL nice place inside also ..

I had them make a registration plate for my homemade trailer when i rebuilt it. It's the trailer i rebuilt in the link in my signature for my boat. The plate came out fantastic, took about a week and a half, and only cost me like 12 bucks! I'll take pictures after the weekend. I'm at work now and I'm leaving to CT after work so i won't be home tonite to take pics.

The plate is awesome and it really makes the trailer look professional. The previous registration plate was a foil stamped sticker which i tore off when i repainted the trailer. So the plate i had made is 100 times better than factory. The only thing i haven't done yet is to drill 1/8" holes in each corner and rivet the plate to the trailer. Right now it's just sticking on there by the double sided self adhesive which came on the plate when i ordered it that way. NY DMV requires the plate be 'permanantly affixed' to the trailer. As far as im concerned it's affixed just as well now as the original sticker but i will drill and rivet non the less.

I'll also take pictures of the capacity plate when it comes in next week. I'm pretty excited about the plates they make. They are SUPER professional looking and reasonably priced.

Well, i picked the boat of from a local metal fab shop that specializes in powder coating and sign making. They made up a transom cover for me. The factory cover had been destroyed so i spent the $150 and had them make this for me. Yeehah. I love it. It was pricey becuase they had to cut the corners at the bends on each side and tig the aluminum back in place. He charged me 2 hours for labor and parts. Well worth it i think .
What do you guys think.

Then i got home after work and spent from 5pm to midnight doing all this :

DSC01486JPG-1.jpg

Trim screwed in place.
Transom corner caps screwed in place.
Outboard mounted and installed.
Power wires run inside powerhead.
Oil tank installed and bolted down, and wires run inside power head.
Outboard fittings greased and wiped down.
OMC remote controls laid out and ready to mount to recently sealed board.

The only thing i have to do is wiring from top to bottom. I'm waiting for wire. It was 31 cents a foot at west marine. I got it for .16 a foot at another web site. I also have the blue sea 12 circuit fuse box, cut off switch, new horn, and generic west marine switch panel just waiting to be installed.

If the wire comes in tomorrow ( which i doubt it will ) i should be close to done by tomorrow night. I had planned a vaction for next week but pushed it out to the 4th of july week. I pray she will be running and ready by vacation time. How am i doing ? This is a first for me. I'm mechanically inclined but honestly am winging this one. I have no clue of outboards and thats what scares me. I hope i did it all correctly.

Does anyone have clear pictures as to how to route the wiring inside a 1987 50hp johnson 2 stroke j50belcud ? When rigging the outboard, i don't think i ran the positive wire and negative wire correctly. When i try to put the cover on the outboard, i'm getting interference. I took pics of the unrig process last fall but the pictures suck. I was cold and just flying around trying to get the outboard off as fast as i could.

Any help would be great. Thanks

Oh yea, would it be crazy of me to want to mount the gas tank at my feet in the bow ? The tank, straps, new fuel line and plumbing would run me upwards of $100, but in comparison to the junky factory steel OMC tank, I'm thinking it may be a good investment.

And Lakelover, i haven't gotten my capacity plate back yet, but here is a picture of the plate i had made for my trailers registration. I have yet to drill four 1/8'' holes and rivet in place.
It's about 2.5 inches tall, and 4.5 to 5 inches long.
Sharp huh ?

All looks great and you're making fast work of it. I have a 2003 50 Johnson that I'll be rigging up in the future, but sorry I can't help you, I have zero experience or knowledge on that.

Thanks for the picture of the trailer plate, looks good. I'm going to take my sorry looking capacity plate to that shop (I'm close to it) and see if they can help me out. I posted a picture of my current one recently in my thread.

Your transom cap looks great, but a little pricey for me. I bought some aluminum channel and will cap the board with that. Even though it is straight, instead of curved like the original, I think I can get it looking OK since I extended the height of my transom to accomodate my motor.

Sounds like you're a pretty busy guy, so thanks for the update.

That transom cap looks sweet and was definitely worth the investment. A number of us have struggled with what to do about replacing a trashed factory cap. Everything is looking really sharp. I had a fuel tank under the bow of my Jupiter. Worked great and it was nice to get some weight shifted forward (especially since I had a heavy V4 outboard) http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/Boat Project/DSCF1927.jpg

Re: 1977 Starcraft 14' Holiday Restoration has officially begun

[Does anyone know if my 50 has a fuse built into the outboard? The previous owner had the outboard wired directly to the battery. I know the outboard should have a fuse but it will be a pain to wire in an inline 30a+ fuse on my little boat. I wouldnt even know where to put it. I guess i would have to mount it on the transom. Yuck.

I'm thinking i should be ok to wire the power wires right to the battery ? I also bought a blue sea 12 circuit fuse box. Do i need the 6 guage power wire fused off the battery before it hits the fuse box ?

I'm thinking outloud. I'm just unsure how i'll wire in the cut off switch and where it would be best.

You should not need to add a fuse to your outboard wiring.

Re: 1977 Starcraft 14' Holiday Restoration has officially begun

so the electrical was done last night. Turns out the wiring i ordered online earlier in the week arrived on friday, but none of the family units advised as such until i found a package tumbling around with my wire in it at the foot of our front door ...

Everything went well the first time. I hooked up all the grounds first, then the positives to all the accessories, including bilge, bow light, stern light, cigarette lighter socket ( also called 12v accessory socket ) ... and horn ...

I have a question, i purchased an atwood transom saver last night at walmart. I took it out of the package today and it says that its designed for outboards with power tilt and trim ... sooo .. what exactly am i supposed to use to save my transom since i dont have power tilt and trim ? .. do i make it work ? .. the extendable arm has holes for adjustment, but in my case they dont line up with my johnson fully extended .. do i just install the transom saver and drill a new hole in the square tubing to make it work ? Or is there another product ?

thanks
