1977 Sylvan Sea Monster Side Console Rebuild

I used Woods formula in my bilge and it's perfect. I'm gonna use use it on the rest of my boat. The other stuff is way to $$.
I'm going in this direction using Kirby paints as my color selection.

Spent yesterday cleaning out the car port and getting the large parts hung and plastic up. Started the morning brushing, blowing off and wiping everything with acetone.

Used my old gun with the 1.5 tip at 85 PSI for the primer - took longer than I thought it would. Wish now I'd used the HVLP with the larger 1.8 tip for that.

Cleaned that gun up and mixed a batch of paint to let it "cook" the recommended 30 min minimum. Mixed it every 10 minutes.

Filled the HVLP gun with the 1.4 tip and let it rip. I have about 1.5 hours left before spraying the final coat, but have it mixed and cooking now. Should finish painting about the time the Admiral wants me to grill the steaks we're having tonight.

Temps have been in the 80's and humidity was high earlier, but seems to be dropping. I sweat bad as it is, and horribly in the full paint suit with plastic lining. Trying hard to hydrate heavily between sessions.

Thanks KC, but as much as I like WOG's 10ft rule I'm thinking for an old trailer it should be 1ft ---- per year Since this trailer is over 40 years old ---------- :laugh:

Once my boat worked and I put bunker on it. I told the admiral we can paint it in the spring i want to play now.

I liked the heavy aluminum keel roller brackets the trailer came with. They're slotted in the back for 1/2" square head T-bolts, so have infinite adjustment. The only problems were they were bored for less common 3/4 ID rollers, and 40 years of use elongated the holes a bit. I made a simple jig and used some Quiksilver Aluminum to fit 5/8 ID 3/4 OD oilite bronze bushings in them for 5/8" shafts.

Hey OR...was there a reason for 85 psi when shooting primer?? That seems a bit High to me!!!
45-50 is about as High as I'd recommend. 1.8 IS the best tip size for primer. IMHO

My old gun only has a 1.5 tip and is rated at 70-90psi. When I do the boat, I'll use the newer HVLP gun that I have a 1.8 tip for. Even at 85, on the old one the primer doesn't come out very fast.

WOW, Well, whatever it takes to get the paint to atomize!!! I took an HF Purple cheapo $9.99 gun (On Sale) and drilled out the 1.4 tip with a 5/64 bit and it shoots primer like a Champ!!! Kinda nice to have a dedicated primer gun. Shoots at 35 psi and really lays down a nice coat of primer. Something to consider.

Well now I'm really feeling STUPID STUPID STUPID! My father passed some words to me when I started in tool and die design that one of his engineering profs told the class. "Don't try to remember anything that can be easily looked up" I was thinking of a different tool Sunday. I looked last night, and my gun is rated at 50-70 PSI. Could be why I was having issues.
I used it for primer and paint on my Applyby jon boat years ago and have used it since with no problems until Sunday.

I have no problem admitting when I'm wrong - just hate when I am.

Hope to get the trailer assembled enough this weekend to roll it out of the car port and get the boat back in it. Supposed to have a lot of rain here again for the next week or so.

Trying to plan ahead some. First will be painting the boat, then start cutting the decking. I will be coating all decking with OTF.

This is how I envision preparing the decks for seat bases. I have the 5/16" SS T nuts and SS flat head socket cap screws for anchoring them. I also have both thin and medium epoxies, chopped fiber and if recommended, cabosil.

I just drilled out the holes on the bottom enough for the T nuts added diameter and the holes for the machine screw was one size larger drill bit. I sealed the raw wood in the holes well before tapping in the T nuts with adhesive and cinching down the screws in them until the glue set. That eliminates the need for the added step of using fiberglass stuff. After installing the decking and adding the pedestals I used blue locktitie on the machine screws.

Some guys used the Garelick SS toggle boat anchors. After reviewing not sure how good they actually are.

I looked at those - very expensive and the stems are plastic. If you need to remove them you,d have to tear the decking back out.

Uhmmm you don't have to tear the deck out to remove them. They're basically a Glorified toggle bolt. the Plastic stem allow the plastic plug to slide down into the 1/2" hole you drill to install them. They are a bit pricey but prolly the best way to install something when you don't have access to the back side of something.

Worked on assembly Fri night and this afternoon. Got the springs, axle, fenders, wheels, tongue, jack, tilt mechanism, and tail light brackets and lights on. Pulled the wires through the tongue, but was too dark to continue after that.
