Hi Everyone!
I have just bought a 1977 Vanguard (70hp Johnson). I noticed the transom has a little crack at the top on either side of the motor. The transome also doesnt go stright across. It kind of "V's" down to the motor the goes straight across the motor then back up on the other side. I dont even know if its supposed to be like that or do I have to replace the wood inside and straighten it out? My first boat so I'm a little unfamiliar with all this.

Thanks

Hi again,

Here is a picture of what i was talking about. Im not sure if the transom is supposed to come out like that and those are just stress crackes on the top or if its supposed to be straight. If its supposed to be straight was is a good way to reinforce it?

Thanks

Looks to me like it should be straight and the wooden core has failed.

Yes. Properly repair it. Anything else is a band-aid at best. You need to remove the rotted wood core and replace it. Lots and lots of threads on here about transom replacements.

Yep, EZ is correct. It is NOT supposed to be like that. Your transom has failed and will need to be replaced. With that large splash well you will either need to remove the entire topcap of the boat or cut the gunwales in front of the splashwell to remove the back 1/3 of the top cap to gain access to the transom. There are examples here on the fourm on how to accomplish this. If you decide to take this on let us know and we will help you all along the process.
