hi Guys,

just purchaced and am getting this girl cleaned up and ready to try for the first time. have turned her over before, but never caught, and wasnt paying attention to the starter at the time...I think it was working OK. anyway, now that Im puting it back together, I see that the starter bendix is stuck in the 'up' position, and wont seem to go down. have jumped it while off the engine and spins but still wont go down. what next...any ideas? (oringinally when turning it over for a compression check, batt was low...hope I didnt screw the starter trying to check the compression).

thanks.

You better pull the starter off and apart and check the bendix threads. When the engine bust off, that bendix screws itself down(With spring). What I have seen most is that little gear is bound up on the threads, and won't come down. Sometimes you can clean up the threads with a file and reassemble, and if not, you can buy a bendix kit, or go on ebay and get a whole starter used, cheap.... Also sometimes that little spring breaks or collapses, and wont throw the gear down onto the threads.
