1978 1400 series?

A friend just picked one of these up for $500-.The owner told him it was a good runner when put away a year or two ago.Are these decent engines?SERIAL #4866436.Also,what is the exact horsepower?He's putting it on an 18ft Starcraft Rocket.Any help would be great.

Hi,

I like them. They are good engines.
140HP at the crankshaft somewhat equivalent to todays 115 HP at the propshaft. Max RPM is 5800 RPM.

I will second Corms opinion, very nice engine, the 1400 is basically the 1500, merc did not want to have two 150 HP engines and they had just brought out there V6 150 Hp engine. Enjoy.

Any idea on the value of this engine?(if it was given a clean bill of health)Also,it's been fresh water only.

Hi,

No I don't but you could look on ebay or craigs list.
I don't think i would sell mine for $1500 but thats me.
They are worth that parted out. IMO

Further to Corms comment, these engines have value to us fanatical few that love the inline 6. Most of us build our own engines and are more likely to pick up an old girl that has been treated roughly and make her sweet again. We buy cheap and don,t like to sell If your friend is happy with his purchase then the value was correct.

He's trying to sell it now!He doesn't have a boat big enough for it,he doesn't plan on buying a bigger boat.
