I have just finished rebuilding my 1978 175hp Crossflow Evinrude. I powered it up once but it took quite a few cranks to get it running with a flush kit. It idled fine in the drive way. Unfotunately I had to take the carbs off to adjust the shift rod.

I have since put the carbs back on and was attempting to restart the engine in the driveway, it was still taking a long time to start after a while it sounded like it was going to kick over and it even did a few times, however I had cranked it so many times I wore one of the brushes out on my starter motor. I am now waiting for the starter motor brushes to come in.

I am wondering if there are any tricks to getting it to run properly. I have brand new plugs in it that i will probably clean again before trying to restart. Not sure what else to do and if this is a common problem after rebuilding?

Thanks,

Breilly

Do a spark test,
try spraying premix fuel directly in the carb throats.
One of those two tests should show the problem,
if it still will not fire up consider a problem with the reeds.
This assumes you have good compression now.

I take it that the choke solenoid is fully closing the choke plates. As you are trying to start it, are the spark plugs wet or dry?

Absolutely check that the choke sol is closing the butterflies fully. The motor wont fire if they are not fully closed.
