I have had a few of those apart and they were splined...but did not come apart easily. Used a wood wedge on the foot to help get it started...

Hmmm - if the L/U drops down a whole 1.5 inches, I can't imagine what else could be holding it. At that point the driveshaft should be loose from the crank and it should just fall off. If the shaft were rusted into the crank, it wouldn't drop that far. With that big a gap, you should be able to see inside - check the water tube and see if that is free, and check the shift rod. Are all the bolts/nuts that hold the L/U on fully removed?

It's a little thing but did you put the gear in forward?

It usually stays behind but no big deal if it goes the other way, just re-hook it.

It's possible, but I can't think of anything that it would snag on. Not engaging the forward gear is most likely the culprit
