Ok a newbie here. I have just purchased my first boat and my first outboard with it. I have a 1978 70 hp evinrude that I want to have a few questions answered. First is the water pump, when I connect the muffs and start her up she spits water out in vents just above the inlet and then some water comes out at one of the joints, i don's see water coming out at anypoint along the top, but when I shut her down I can here water draining out of the top. I have run her for a bit with the muffs, and she never got hot on the cylinders. was easily able to touch them. Second question, i just did a deep clean with seafoam and after wards I removed the sparkplugs and noticed the plugs are a bit wet, is this from the deep clean or from the oil/fuel mix being too rich? how do I fix. engine starts up great and seems to run OK. can increase the trottle and she revs but sounds a bit rough, is this normal, or do I need to take a look at something. Last question, when I purchased it, the previous owner told me that the gasket at the bottom of the power head was bad causing the exhaust to leak back into cowl, if it is set at idle for a while. There are a few holes drilled into the cowl(which I will fix) but does this sound like it could be true.

Please advise me....

Bumping you back up again, its been busy here and you got missed.

first thang, get yourself a factory manual,
it might be available here on iBoats.

Did the PO do the waterpump?
The PO might have drilled those holes to let the exhaust escape, fill them in and the engine might choke on fumes and quit. I'd try leave that for a winter project because I think you have to lift the powerhead off to get at the gasket.

Thats about the extent of my nonexistent expertise.

In the first place you need to get it off the hose and out of the driveway and into the lake. You cannot test a water pump by running on muffs.

Second, it is a two-stroke and the plugs should not be expected to run dry, especially in the driveway.

Third, don't be revving it up and expect it to be smooth in the driveway. In fact, don't be revving it up at all when on muffs.

It sounds like you do have an exhaust leak. At least the guy was upright enough to tell you. You bought it knowing that, so now it's your job to fix it.

thanks, everyone for the info. I know that I will probably do a few stupid things in the beginning of learning. The PO did not replace the waterpump to my knowledge. How long of a process is it? and when I take off the lower unit would I be able to access the gasket from the bottom? I do have a manual now. But any insight would be great.

This site will be a great help to you - http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=4a446d0b4d7a80904e26fe4fa48753d2

Changing waterpump for first time - hmmmmm.......2 to 4 hours, if you have the right pump kit. Read manual carefully 1st and pay attention to getting the shift linkage unhooked before dropping the lower unit. If any doubt, post a question here. The above parts schematics can help though to see how things are put together.

Can't access that gasket from the bottom. Sorry.
