I'm working on a boat that's been sitting outside unused for about nine years. The trim/tilt worked fine ten years ago, so I know everything is wired up correctly.

The engine is a 1978 85HP Johnson with the three wire trim/tilt motor. I tested the trim/tilt switch on the remote control and cleaned all of the connections in the solenoid box. When I push the switch forward I hear the solenoid click, but nothing else. From what I can tell I'm getting power to the motor leads the way I should be.

I found a schematic which shows the three wires, so I disconnected the motor from the solenoid and when I apply 12V directly to the leads I get no noise from the motor regardless of which direction I try to run it. I've tried thumping the outside of it and it still does nothing, which makes me think the motor is stuck (maybe rusted internally??) or bad.
  • Is there anything else I can/should check before replacing the trim/tilt motor?

  • If I need to replace it, is it possible to do so without disassembling any of the engine? One reason I ask is that I suspect there's a third mounting screw (which I can't see) behind the motor and if there is I don't see how I would be able to get to it.

The motor likely had water in it and is now rusted solidly stuck.-----I believe the trim tilt assembly must be removed from motor for the replacement of the trim motor.

Last one I replaced was on a 175 a few years ago. Fairly simple to remove since it was inside my shop and I was able to put a strap on the motor from a rafter to tilt it up out of the way to remove the t/t unit.
