hey guys. going to pick her up in the morning! the fella said he didn't use it last season but fed her some fuel today and she fired right up.

best part is...200 clams!!! i'm stoked to say the least. i've been searching for a deal for a while now. keeping my fingers crossed and hoping not to get burned. oh well if i do, the rewards of it being a beauty outweigh all else.

anyway, was doing some reading a while back and was wondering if someone could verify if this is one of the models that can take the 15 hp carb. i'm pretty sure it is but i'd just like to know for the future.

thanks fellas.

So........where is Allentown and what time you going? Just kidding. Looks to be very well kept. I hope it serves you well. Yes you can bolt a 15 HP. carb. on it but do a search here first. The jury is still out on the effectiveness of the conversion. Either way a 9.9 has lots of power. If you need more get an 18 or 25 but don't expect to find one in that condition. Best of luck. Rick.

P.S. Here is a link you will enjoy.

yeah 9.9 will be plenty for me i was just wondering if it was one of the models that it could be done to.

i'm really hoping it'll be a nice motor. after talking to the guy i feel that it's the real deal. i've been searching for a good motor for a long time now. hell, just this morning i passed on a 03 tohatsu 8 hp for 500. now i'm glad i did! you really have to scour craigslist to find a good deal and when you find it you gotta jump! it'll be a 3 hour drive for me to go get it but i live in central PA and there really isn't much going on here in the way of outboards for sale so i figured all along i'd have to take a road trip.

thanks for the confirmation on the carbs rick, and thanks for the link! looks like some good reading.

there's a beautiful 1978 25 hp johnson on craigs for 500 somewhere around rochester NY if anyone's interested. i was gonna go after it but i have a 14 foot jon and a 15 foot runabout and was hoping to be able to use it on both. the 25 would have been way more power than i'd be comfy with on the jon! i just need something to scoot around with... best part is tha t last month i sold a 67 5 hp johnson for 350 at a yard sale! i did let it go with a new tank an extra lower unit and three props. 5 hp just wasn't enough for me, plus the 67 was a really funky model and finding the reverse props was a real fiasco! she ran great but i wasn't crazy about the throttle being on the motor and trying to spin her around for reverse.

That looks more like a 75 or 76 or the cowl has been changed, the graphics don't look like a 78.

Either way the price is right, check the compression.

yep you're right about the cowl. someone must have replaced it at one time or another. they had painted over the '15' on the logos. checked the model # and it's a 9.9/1978.

anyway i picked her up yesterday and just got a chance to try and start it up. 3rd pull and it fired right up. after the initial start it was first pull each time...now i need to get the carb cleaned out and replace lower unit oil. i'm reading up on getting it all tuned up and ready to roll. the only thing that really seems like it may need some attention is the twist throttle, feels really sluggish with a dead spot between slow/start. nice thing is he gave me the shop service manual for the motor and it's got just about everything i need in it, so i'm sure i'll get it figured out.

Impeller! Replace the Impeller. Congratulations. As far as the twist throttle you can improve it but they are all sluggish. Rick.
