I don't think it will take much "engineering". The 1978 90 should have been a 100 cu inch inline 6 with two cylinders and the pump inboard, (same as my 1978 115), and the old 1000 should be the 90 cu inch. I swapped my 1968 1250 to my 1969 1000 without much trouble, (a bolt up job). The 1250 was similar to yer 90 and the 1000 should be similar to mine (at least where the trim bolts up to the engine).
