I have a 1978 115HP model number 115899.

It runs pretty good, but doesn't idle well. Basically stalls at idle. If I punch it right from Nuetral it runs fine.

Engine is fogged every winter.

I read alot about rebuilding carbs, but this seems drastic. Also there doesn't seem to be anywhere with actual instructions.

Is there something I can adjust first? And if so where?

Also my center cylinder on my hydrolic trim kit leaks at the top. Right where the shaft goes in. Can I order just that top cap and O-Ring? How hard is that to replace?

I am not one of the experts here, but I can help you get started...Did it ever idle well??? did this just start to happen??? What happens if you raise the rpms with the idle throttle lever on the controller???
If it just started doing this, I think your Idle circiut jets may be clogged and that would require you to open/clean/ and rebuild your carbs.

I had a similar leak on my Tilt-n-Trim unit. I sprayed some PB Blaster onto the seal. pB Blaster
Its been almost 2 weeks, and not a drop! Might work for you too.....good luck!

nah, it's been that way for a bit.
If I raise the RPMs with the lever it runs up fine.

But when you engage the gear, it sets that lever back to the idle position, and if you don't punch it, you stall.

I agree with boilermaker about the carb problem. For a temp. fix or maybe not, you could try setting the idle up just a bit. When looking at the motor from the front there should be an adjustment screw on the left side. It is connected to the throttle lincage and at full throttle closed it should bottom out on the engine block, it has a rubber nub on the end to protect the block. With the motor running at a low idle in neutral, the lever down, turn the screw in a turn or two and see if it helps.

Nickdiction...
I will give you the 2 most important bits of advice that I received here at IBOATS....

#1...Get a Service/Shop Manual for your engine!
Get the OMC/JOHNSON factory manual if you can...if not, I have found that the manual put out by CLYMER to be OK!

#2... Get a TACHOMETER on your boat!!!
A tach is the most important gauge you can have... If you know what the engine is doing when running well, then if its off a few hundred rpm's..you know its time to check things out. Its needed to setup the engine & prop the rig correctly...ect.
Make sure you get one for OUTBOARDS...its not the same as an automotive tach! You can get one at any Marine/Boat shop or any of the online shops.
Its easy to install. ITS A MUST HAVE!
GOOD LUCK
Good Luck

I'd try a Seafoam treatment or two (on the rich side in your gas tank) to see if you might melt some varnish out of the carbs. If you fog through the carb throats it doesn't really get to the internals of the carb.

Search Seafoam on all the forums for opinions of other iboaters -- I got 67 hits just now and a random sample was very positive. I've had dazzling results.

Hey Boilermaker, where can I buy PB Blaster, and what is it? Do they sell it at NAPA, or Carquest?

PB Blaster is similar to Nuts Off, etc. I helps break free rusted on bolts, etc. It can be purchased at any auto parts store.

I am suprised that it stopped the leak. Maybe it flushed something out or swelled up the seal.

Yea >>>I got it at NAPA, along with my supply of Seafoam & Creep(Seafoam spraycan).
I have to get mine when I visit My folks in PA, because I don't see NAPA stores here on Long Island.

LOWBUD>> I'm sure it swelled up the seal, but thats fine with me. My boat sat in "storage" for well over 20 years! It was my dads & he just kind of forgot about it.
Anyway, after setting everything else back to operating shape, it bugged me to see this leak everytime I used the lift. I also tried spraying it, over the last 2 years, with other penetrates such as WD40, Zep 45, and Seafoam Creep.....still leaked.

The print on the PB blaster lable said it "...restores life to O rings & seals".
All I can say is that now, after about 3 weeks>>>not a drop! :D

Thanks for the info. I am going to have see if I can find it around here at the local NAPA. I know they sell SeaFoam there because I seen it the other day.
Somebody had told me to try B12 carb cleaner to swell the seal, but it didnt work either.

Hey Boilermaker
If you need to purchase those items (pbblaster, seafoam, deep creep, etc...) they are all available at local Long Island Auto Zone stores (at least the one in West Babylon). Also, there are a few Napa locations on the Island as well. Check the website for locations. Copaigue, Hicksville, Bayshore, East Islip are just a few locations for Napa.
Enjoy!

Re: 1978 Evinrude 115. Idle and Trim Questions...

NICKDICTION>>> I hope it was just a low idle setting>>>but I would keep an eye on the spark plugs for signs of a lean running cylinder.
After running the engine on the water>>>maybe let it idle for a bit. Then after its shutdown, pull the plugs and check them. They should all look close to the same, a little wet, and a nice light brown(or tan>>>like creamed coffee) on the insulator. As I said earlier>>>get a manual & you will be on you way!
GOOD LUCK!
