Have purchased a 1978 Glastron Carlson CVX 16 SS that has an OMC 400 outdrive and the motor block and head did not come with the boat. (said block was cracked) Have located a rebuilt 3.0 Chevy Based marine motor. Now will this motor work with the OMC intake and all the other parts and pieces that are still with the boat? Seems I am seeing that OMC motor replacements that some are the Chevy based motors, Ford, Volvo etc. And as such I am now totally confused at what motor will work. Appreciate anyone's time to answer this, Thanks in advance.

probably, but you need to verify the year of the motor. If it is any newer than 1989, do not get it.

The coupler that connects the crankshaft to the driveshaft of your sterndrive only fits 3.0's made before 1990 and there is no coupler available to hook up to a newer motor. If no numbers on the motor or proof of year, take the 400 series coupler with you and fit it to the crank flange to verify compatibility.

You can fit any 2.5L or 3.0L OMC or Mercruiser from 1966 to 1989
avoid 1990-2013 3.0L

Thanks, That helps a lot, I am also seeing that some members are for replacing the OMC 400 out drive, Since parts are scarce and opting for a Mercruiser I/O. As I have not put much money into what I have yet do you consider this a viable option. And are there years of the Mercruiser group that I should stay away from? Or are parts available for all years ? Have also located a complete system Motor and out drive from a 1978 Mercruiser setup. Might that be a better option? Would the steering and throttle controls need to be exchange also?

I would suggest getting a new boat before doing that. You would have to completely rebuild the transom since the OMC cutout is bigger than the mercruiser one

I agree with Bruce. For what you'll pay in parts converting to Mercruiser, you should be able to find a nice running boat with a Mercruiser powertrain in it already.

Thanks for the response. I have looked closer at the transom and it will probable require repair anyways. Some of the inner layers are showing water retention and a bit of soft wood. And it seems I live in an area that has plenty of donor boats out there for the power train. As I do not really have one any way. I have worked on boats while I was in the service and this hull is over all in very nice shape. The Transom does not look as it goes completely cross the entire stern so might not have to even get into the flotation pockets. I have seen a few other threads showing transom repairs using wood and the seacast pour so options are very much open for me.

Also may have some parts available for some members that require the omc stuff I will no longer need.
