Well, it FINALLY warmed up enough to get moving on the boat.

Pulled off the transom bracket today. Took a little elbow grease to get it off, but its off!

And...the not so good:

Ok...so I cannot for the life of me, find a transom seal kit that even looks like it has the same seal as mine does...what model do I have?

I've got to replace electrical wires as well...

Glad to see your back on the boat.
As for the seal, It looks just like mine. Mine is a 1988 Alpha one. I don't think yours is a Alpha but the seal looks the same.

That looks just like mine and I have an 81. The gasket set goes by serial number.

Thanks, I finally found the right table in the Clymers guide late last night, yeah, I have a model 'l', it was the only outdrive connected to a 898 (305) during '78.

It looks like I pretty much need to rebuild mine, shift cable looks worn, tilt/trim wires are broken off, etc, etc.

So...I think its time I get a new carb...mine has pretty significant surface rust below the butterfly's and on some of the linkage. I'm getting a fresh 305 motor, so I'm not going to risk it with a questionable carb.

I'm trying to learn from everyone else here...suggestions on a replacement new/refurb'd carb?

wow....thats pretty.

as far as the first project.......your a transom away from a new carb my friend. you will have lots of time to investigate the i/o forum here for carb possibilitys.

by the way i love the arrangement you used for frames....thet will be a very strong boat.

as far as the first project.......your a transom away from a new carb my friend. you will have lots of time to investigate the i/o forum here for carb possibilitys.

Yeah, I have motor getting rebuilt, the electronic distributor upgrade purchased...so this one may be on the water next spring. We'll see!

Very nice work. When I went looking for a transom seal for my 71 there were two types. one was the old type like I have and is a cork gasket (actual mercruiser part). It was $34! The newer type, like you have, sat in a groove and was $9.

As for your 305....why? I would be searching for a 350.

Yeah, I know, I get asked that by, well, everyone.

Basically, I'm not a speed junkie, and I wanted to work with that I have, and what the boat came with...it shipped with a 305, and that's what will go back in.

Right now, the CVZ-18 (project boat) needs the entire gimbal housing redone, tilt/trim sensor wires are cut, shift cable worn & rusted...so I have lots of time before the motor goes back in.

I can undertand that it came with a 305 and that's what you want to go back in. As for the speed junkie...no body is FORCING you to push that throttle all the way down

Just a quick update. Still working on the boat. Transom is coming along nicely...when you're working alone...its hard to take pictures. Frisco's my hero!

Should have the transom bracket back on the boat in a week or 2. Here's a couple pictures of them together:
