Re: 1978 Glastron Carlson CVZ-18 Restore

Wow, what a fantastic story!! I can't wait to see video of you taking her out on her first voyage in many years.

I think that the choice of which boat to sell is a no brainer, since your dad (R.I.P.) and your son helped out with the Gold Glastron, that's the one you should keep.

Keep up the great work!!

I have listed 'Bluebell' the CVZ-19 for sale, so yeah, while I don't want either to go, it is a no-brainer. I'll only let Bluebell go to someone who will take care of it, and would prefer a Classic Glastron club member who'll appreciate it.

So...might be harder to sell that way, but so be it. I'm not desperate to sell it...so I can take my time.

Hot diggity! 87 degrees in Des Moines yesterday...I couldn't resist it any longer. Fired right up, ran the motor at 2k RPMs for about 20 mins, everything came up to temp, no leaks, purrs like a kitten. Idle is now set, runs like a top, and I'm excited to get this thing on the water soon.

The sound isn't the best...

(Its boring...start at about 2 mins in...)

Ok, engine is broken in & running great! I did find a couple issues today after giving it a closer inspection.

First off...the MSD Streetfire distributor is not staying. The engine was built & timed with it in, and I didn't want to potentially mess up the engine before I knew everything was in & set.

It will be switched out with the Mercury Thunderbolt IV distributor I have waiting in the garage...so no lectures please :) . I know.

Can the reverse lockout be fixed? Or do I just get a new one?

I can relate to all you've done. I just completed the total restoration of a '79 CVZ 18. Can you tell me how to connect with a Glastron -Carlson owners group if there is one? Thanks

Wow--these pictures take me back--I bought a repo'd 1980 CVZ-18--blue/green--it was only 4 yrs old but had been left out uncovered, and I had to replace the floor--it was the hottest June we had ever had in OH and I was sweating bullets pulling that carpet up and tearing pieces of rotten wood out. Funny how I remember that more than all the fun I've had on it. At the time the open bow section was good, so I left it there--regret it because it needs done now--what a great job you've done here!
Anyone want a green one?

Your new color choice is excellent--Gosh, looking at your blue one--I SO wish mine still looked like that--but you take me back there---

For the gentleman who wanted the forum--try www.classicglastron.com

I'm not getting notified of posts to my thread anymore...totally missed both posts recently.

Anyway, I recently sold Goldie to a fellow CGOAMN.com club member, cgoamn.com is the local chapter I'm in. The 'Big' meet is coming up in Red Wing, MN in August!

We had 50 boats at last year's meet:

Well, I keep plugging away at the boat. I've been working on getting the outdrive hooked up, replacing gimbal bearing, bellows, etc.

I made my own gimbal bearing press so I wouldn't have to beat on the transom. I'm sure its up to it...but why? I just slowly cranked it in in about 15 mins:

A little PVC, a pipe fitting and a couple washers...and its a mini-press:

Nice job, looks like you made a trip to Ace.....I love it when I'm building something like that and they ask me if I need help....I don't even try to explain what I'm building, lol!

I figured there was an easier way to install the bearing. I put mine in while the housing was on the bench/garage floor and it was still a pain.

That's exactly what I do. "Nope, I'm good, Thanks" is my standard response! Glad I'm not the only one.

And we're done!!!! Outdrive slid in smooth as butter...then had to take it off again b/c I didn't pay close enough attention to the gasket I should have used.

I have a little more fine tuning on the shift cable adjustment...but, shifts smooth, no issues.

Just need to change the impeller and gear lube. (I did make sure it was pumping water as is of course...before running the motor for an extended period of time.)

Another shameless video:

Well, I sold my CVZ-19 aka 'Bluebell' 3 weeks ago, so...I had to get this boat done in time for our 4th of July week vacation. 3 weeks ago, Goldie looked like this (actually, the wood wasn't there, nor the engine cover). Since our 1 'big' vacation is to head to Park Rapids, MN and spend the week on the lake...and I sold the 'good' boat...I had to kick it into high gear!

Trailer needed new lights & rewiring...no time to paint before vacation!

Built the engine 'dog house' with slide in lockable panels that will allow full access to the motor for maintenance & winterizing.

Blower venting:

Added top pad; carpeted b/c it will see a lot of foot traffic:

Adding in the retractable tow bar, which was something not on the original boat. I wanted something a little better than the stern eyelet for towing & skiing:

Trying to bring the shine back:

Built this extremely bad bench seat so we had something for the kids to sit on for the summer. My semi-custom upholstery won't be ready for 8 more weeks, and we need something to sit on! (So...its ugly & very temporary, but did the job.)

Since I sealed up the outdrive myself (never having seen or attempted this myself before...) I did an 'on trailer' dunk test...no leaks!

And...the pay off. After being in the lake for 8 days straight, I had zero leaks. Success!

Although I thoroughly disprove of the sale of the blue outboard hull, "Goldie" is looking and sounding sweet! Nice work.

I received a present from the FedEx man yesterday morning. A very sought after part for the CVZ model, the hard 'convertible' bow cover! (Only available as an option, and only for 2 years.)
