Re: 1978 Glastron Carlson CVZ-18 Restore

I received a present from the FedEx man yesterday morning. A very sought after part for the CVZ model, the hard 'convertible' bow cover! (Only available as an option, and only for 2 years!)

OH, You are a lucky man, YOU! And you're gonna keep us guessing where you found this treasure?

I was hooked up by a classic glastron club member, he found it on a parts boat in MI that was listed on CL. Boat wasn't listed/identified correctly, and the owner was willing to part it out.

No, I didn't have one. 1st boat was a Glastron V-143 Jetflite, 1971?' w/a 1973 Merc 65 3 Cylinder. I still miss her. I was thinking of the CV's someday, when I can find time /space / $$$$.?? for a V-8 boat. Thanks, Moosev

Should be all fixed up now. I haven't updated this in a while.

I've had issues with the original aluminum tank...I made the mistake of not cleaning it! (And...its under the new sealed up floor...dang it!)

Generally, not good to see this in your fuel tank:

So...out comes the floor again:

This ended up being a blessing in disguise, as I have a drainage issues from the tank area back to the bilge. Water could get in, but was blocked in fully draining...

Cleaned tank with Marine Clean, and it ended up being that all that varnish was actually saving me from having a fuel leak into the bilge:

All clean!

New fuel sender:

Tank repaired and sprayed with Line-X so the aluminum is protected from further corrosion:

I also ended up repainting my trailer this summer. It broke on the way home from our annual trip to N. MN. Luckily it didn't do any damage to the boat! (Whew.)

Taking if off the trailer:

Just sanded and rolled on multiple coats of Rust-Oleum 'Hammered' Copper finish. Looks great, very durable when its fully dried:

New carpet wood:

Had trailer fixed, had the seams boxed in and rewelded. Should be fixed for good now!

All back together!

Off topic, but this little guy kept me company for about 2 weeks in a row...he'd leave during the day, and every night would come back to the garage:

Picked up a cheap unique prop to play with, its a Gil Six-Gun composite prop. I have 17p & 19p blades for it...I'd love to find the 21p blades to try. (17p/19p aren't enough...motor rpm range is wrong.)

I'm working on reworking my dash/gauges...I've never really loved the steep angle the gauges sit at, so I've started working on a long panel that sits at a more viewable angle. What are your winter projects?

Alternative, original angle, different layout:

Mom came down and taught me how to upholster:

Look at that...my first practice welted seam!

Mom & I sewed for about 5 days...I could do the welting, but I needed her expertise to do stuff like joining the seams and finishing up the finishing touches:

Working on adding some lighting around the boat too:

Hooking up the speedo pickup & tube. It'll be nice as I've never had a working speedometer before:

I'm also replacing the steering cable & helm as it was binding & outdated:

And I did a lot of wet sanding, more wet sanding, then buffed, buffed and buffed some more:

Re: 1978 Glastron Carlson CVZ-18 Restore

I ended up raising the floor about 3/4" when I put in the new one, so I had to trim down the bow seat bases as once I got the bow cover installed, it didn't fit correctly:

I was also able to find the slide hinges for the bow cover mounts:

Great job! I've been eyeballing that Hammered paint, let us know how it holds up.

Love the wet sand before and afters, too!
