My boat has the 470 with the alternator update, the P/O had plumbed in two 3" heat exchangers but one would leak around the end caps. I did a total rebuild of the lower unit water pump and changed the heat exchanger back to a single. It runs about 160 on the muffs, so that should be good. I noticed the stator is still behind the harmonic balancer and I want to remove the stator but the balancer will not come off. I have used a puller with penitration oil and left pressure on the balancer over night but it still would not budge. I have used heat along with the puller but it is stuck on tight.

What else can it try to get the balancer off, thanks.

Have to ask, did you remove the bolt out of the end of the crankshaft?

Well you could just leave it on there, or get a bigger puller. Under no circumstances should you pound or tap on it, as that could dislodge the magnets in the rotor, then you will HAVE TO remove it. I know the first time I removed mine it was stuck on there pretty good, just cranked on the puller and it suddenly popped and came off. You will need a threaded rod (1/2 inch fine) and some nuts and washers to pull it back on (again no pounding). Last time I used a puller set from Autozone and a short piece of pipe as an adapter to put it on. Good luck.

Be careful of the nose of the crankshaft getting damaged. I like to reinstall the bolt in the crank without the washer, so the puller is against the bolt head instead of the crankshaft.

As long as the head of the bolt is small enough to clear the hole in the balancer.

Auto Zone will rent you the tools: puller and an installer for free. Just use it and return it when your done.

We do not have Auto Zones here in West Fargo anymore, I will try O'Reillys. Yes, the bolt is out and I was keeping the just the bolt threaded in to protect the crank shaft.

I will continue working on it.

I finally got it off. My next question is, is this where antifreeze is supposed to leak out when the water pump cam seal fails? See photo, it is the downward facing tube with a brass plug in the end to the left of the crank shaft, or is it a cooling system drain? When I took out the brass plug nothing came out, it was full of debris. I used a drill bit in my fingures to clean it out and then antifreeze started to drain out and I noticed my overflow container level starting to drop. I anything wrong, do I need to perform the cam seal repair?

Thanks

470 weep hole.jpg

This picture shows the weep hole.
I think you unscrewed a drain plug. It is good to keep that passage clean.

Just use a toothpick to make sure the hole is clear.

I picked at it with a small allen and it is clear. It looks to me that the cam seals have been repaired by the P/O because of what looks like to me, a resealed front oil pan. That should put me in a good spot with this whole engine then, good running temp and no leaks.
