I'm putting my lower unit back together and am having trouble putting the shaft lever into the dog cradle, knowing the correct procedure would really help, I can't find any videos or manuals explaining how to do this, thanks.

You are going about it all wrong !-----First you put the shift fork in,---Followed by the pivot pin.---Then the cradle is put into the fork.-----Then the clutch dog is put in.----Note that the clutch dog must be put in correctly .-It is important to know that the ring / groove on the clutch dog must face the correct way .-Your manual would have that detail.----Then the propshaft is inserted .---The detent balls must line up with the pockets in the clutch dog too.-----Do not rush this job as some patience is required when doing this for the first time.----Takes me about 10 minutes , no more !

i told you that you'd be in good hands over here in the J/E forum cat! :) In case you're still scratchin' your head, I found the service manual for my '83.
