1978 Johnson 35 hp Sea-Horse lower unit?

I'm trying to get to my gears to visually inspect them, watched some videos and at this point there reverse gear slipped right out, but I have this shifter in the way which I can't figure out how to take this thing out to get my reverse gear out, I figure then I might be able to visually inspect my other gears. I've looked for hours for a video on a motor similar to mine but can't find any. If I have to take the whole lower unit off I will, is that a web site that sales service manuals that you can download?

Step # 1 is to remove the lower unit.---Next is to unscrew and remove the lower shift rod.-----Still puzzled after doing those steps, post more questions.

I took the lower unit off and unscrew the lower shift rod but still don't know how to take the propeller shaft and gears out with the shaft yoke still in the way? It's like a puzzle, do I have to unscrew the phillip screw on the outside of the casing?

????---Take a pair of needle nose pliers and pull the shift yoke out the opening.---Depending on far you have to go you may need to remove the pivot pin next.

I got it, I didn't realize the yoke hooked into the bottom piece with the cotter pin, I thought it was bolted. The shaft and reverse is out and looks good so far, thanks.

All the gears look good as far as I can tell, but the clutch dog has rounded corners which people told me that is why at high speeds my boat acts like it has hit a stump. I'll check my water pump I quess since I have it pulled apart. Thanks for the help, I wanted to fix it before selling the boat.

No doubt about it, that dog is toast.

I just notched what appears to be chips and a ball bearing loose? I'm not really sure how this clutch dog engages the forward gear, will these chips cause the new clutch dog to go bad as well? I would prefer to change the forward gear now if so. Any advise on where this ball bearing came from?

The ball came out of the hole in the propshaft.---There are 2 balls and a spring.---Purpose of them is to hold the clutch dog in nuetral untill some force is applied.----That makes for a more positive snap action when motor is shifted.
