My first chance, since I got the boat last week Friday (1981 Wellcraft Air slot 16,5' )to mess with it.

I have been studying these forums for the last week and already gathered a ton of information.

I figured I better make shure if the motor is running, before I dicide if this thing is worth putting money into, problem is controls + cables, electrical and mechanical is al a mess.

So, I got to crank it and do a compression test, 1 and 3= 130lbs,
2 = 110 lbs.

Quick question, should I carry on with this motor and rebuilt it later, after I got the boat revived or should I fix the boat and trailer and look out for a newer, say 90 to 115 hp motor.

I will try and do a actual start up tomorrow, I assume it is save to start and idle the motor on the muffs.

Tx,
Joe.

eh...... the readings are the same as mine. I run it like that. When it dies I'll replace it. but 2 years later and its still in good running condition. Idle is a little off, but doesn't bother me too much.

Re: 1978 Johnson 75hp

I used to 'restore' my boats before taking them on a test launch.

Now I get them in running condition, and do the bare minimum it takes to get them water worthy and test run them.

Might want to do the same. Get that outboard running and reliable, and launch.

Also, you'll adjust the throttle and shift cables on the earmuffs, and it'll idle good. but once you launch its completely different in the water. Expect to be tied to the dock for awhile while playing with the cables to get them adjusted.

Also, if the engine has the tell water/pee stream, its probably clogged with stuff. Unclog it so you can see if the water pumps working. or just replace the impeller.... which you should do anyway
