1978 Johnson Sea Horse 25hp

I've been told a 2 stroke is oil and gas mixed how do I know if my motor needs that when I bought it it already had fuel in it I've never had to put more the man who sold it to me never told me if it was 2 or 4 stroke but gave me the gas cans with it so how do I know what fuel it needs?

Well, BrG13, you have come to the right place.

Welcome to iboats.

Your engine is a 2 stroke, which needs oil mixed with the gas.

In your 6 gallon tank you need 1 pint of TCW3 certified outboard oil to 6 gallons of 87 octane unleaded regular gas. That is really a 48:1 mix, but we call it 50:1.

I really recommend that you get yourself an Owners Manual, which will explain the details of operating and taking care of your outboard. It is a great engine and will outlast your children if you take good care of it.

Try ebay for the Manual, or you can get a reprint of the original from kencook.com or one of several other reprint suppliers.

Great engine.

Get a manual and service it. At a minimum it needs:

1. Carb rebuild. You may be able to skip this one, for now. Ethenol fuels will play havoc with it, eventually. The carb rebuild is easy, with a manual.

2. Water pump.

3. Spark plugs-correct Champions.

4. Lower unit service. Replace the drain/fill plug screw gaskets/O'rings.

You can do all of that, including manual, for less than $150.00.

Do that and it will run forever.
