Hello, I have acquired a 78 Lowe hustler pro and I cannot figure out how to get the steering system out of the console. I have removed the steering wheel but there is a piece(I call it a piece because I don’t know what it is) that is on the end of the steering shaft that is preventing me from removing the bezel that covers the shaft and hole in the console. I looked underneath seeing if I could just remove the whole gearbox and just push everything through the console but the bezel prevents all of that. I cannot find anything that is holding this piece of equipment onto the shaft.

It appears to be a splined shaft and will likely require a flanged gear puller to pop it off also looks like a threaded shaft end that should have a nut to secure the flange on the shaft. Did you remove the nut or was it missing?

I removed the nut that was threaded on the end, it was holding the steering wheel on, along with a couple of bolts. I’ve never pulled anything like this so it’s all new to me.

As Redtruck stated, you will need a 3 jaw puller ,cheapest one probably from Harbor Freight. Make sure its the correct diameter. After pressure is applied you smack the pressure screw with a hammer. That usually does the trick. Couldn't hurt to soak with PB blaster before you head out to buy puller. Make sure there is no set screw in the bezel as that would slow things down if not loosened up.

Mr. 88,

the bezel moves freely back and forth on the steering shaft. I do not think it will be and hinderence. I guess my only question is how would I determine what diameter gear puller I would need?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... The diameter of the steel hub yer tryin' to pull off the shaft,.....

If yer replacin' the helm,...
Just saw the shaft off, just behind the hub, 'n pull it all out,.....

In todays world, that's All Obsolete, 'n yer not gonna find any parts to fit that assembly anyways,....
Get a new helm, 'n cable Kit,....

Something like this kit would work well and is a handy tool for a number of services( pulley flywheels, harmonic balances etc.

Update: I was able to rent a 5 ton three jaw gear puller from autozone. Came off with ease. I did more investigating there is broken piece on the helm too so I am going to have to replace it all anyway. So now I am doing research to find a replacement kit.
