I have what I thought to be a 1978 Mercury EXLPT. I made it a new wiring harness and borrowed a switch box off my 1975 150HP. Took it out today and it runs great. But I wanted to replace the water impeller. So I started looking into its serial number for parts. The motor is a 25" XL but the serial number looks like it has to be a 1977. But they didn't make the XL until 1978 from what I see. Could this be a half year model? Could the PO have changed out the bottom end to an XL and the transom mount would still have my serial number? The 2002 Merc 40HP that I replaced with this motor was also a 25". So I do want the XL shaft.

dunno
merc in the past 30 years or so NEVER used a year model, only seriel numbers to ID engines and service stuff.
all the inline 6 engines from about 1970 to production end used the same upper housing pump kit, there were a few different pump bases.
