I have got a 1978 mercury 110 blueband and am trying to replace the cam-reverse lock which is situated behind the saddle on the mid section of the engine i have purchased the seloc manual and it doesnt say anything in there how to take the saddle off so far i have removed the 4 mounts and disconnected the reverse rod link which holds the bracket in place but it seems to be still held in place by the gear selector shaft which runs through the centre the lower unit is also removed at the moment if anyone knows how to take the saddle off please help as it is nearly there apart from the gear selector holding it on.....

any help will be much appreciated

Re: 1978 mercury 110 HELP

First the Mercury manual avoids the reverse lock also, your very close you need to remove both the lower unit and the upper shift shaft from the mid section then the 2 phillips screws and it comes off. Nice engineering right!

Re: 1978 mercury 110 HELP

They built so many mickey mouse Tilt sysems they are hard to seperate without a serial number some had the locking pawls spring applied some of the things were applied by the rod itself if it's one of them there is a little clip retainer the when shifted pushes the pawls down if that falls off they don't work. You might goto the BAM Marine site and see if yours has all the parts.

Re: 1978 mercury 110 HELP

thanks laddies it is the type with the rod up to the pawls the retainer clip is there bit strange but i noticed i still got quite a bit of movement where the reverse cam is ill try a few new parts to see what it is.................

Also another question i have stripped the carb down to fit new gaskets and seals as having to spray fuel in to get it started. Under the float there is the float needle is this meant to have a spring in or does it return due to gravity as i have removed it not seen a spring present i ordered the needle and spring but only a needle was in the packet...... any ideas???

Re: 1978 mercury 110 HELP

Those engines came with a spring on the inlet needles merc#1395-9022 or sierra#18-7595 we have had several come in for hard starting that have had solid needles in them, usually hard starting comes from the low speed pickup tube being dirty or if the engine has a two piece choke butterfly the springs are weak or broken and they open on cranking the engine.
