About 2 years ago from Corjen. I got it HOT on the lake and I've had issues ever since. Compression is still above 110psi and it runs great on muffs but...Put her in the lake and she won't run. Too dang cheap to have a REAL mechanic look at it sooooo,,, I just keep tinkering. It may be a lot cause.

WOG, sounds like it's time for a rebuild. And YOU can do it as well. :thumb:

TC, Nice Catch! That MFG will fly across the water. Mine was an 85 hp and she rode waves like a champ.

Hi all. So far so good. Although I haven't had the motor running yet, I've been busy tearing it down, studying it, etc. I've taken the carbs off to clean them. I picked up a couple of carb kits. I also picked up the thermostats and gaskets. This thing takes two thermostats. Dang. I also have the lower unit off and have replaced the impeller and installed a water pump rebuild kit with all the seals, etc. I also picked up some paint so I may just sand some crud off and freshen this thing up. I'm also going to unhook the VRO pump and mix my gas. The reeds look mint as well. I was a little worried as the PO installed Boyenson Reeds.

I was able to clean up the lower unit inside some of the pockets. They were full of crud and sand and stuff. Also cleaned up the driveshaft. There was a lot of rust on it which I am surprised at. Has anyone every painted the driveshaft. I would like to try and protect it from future damage.

I don't see any reason you could paint the drive shaft. I would use some very good primer (a two part) and then some extremely good paint to finish it off. with an added hardener as well I would avoid the splined ends though so you won't have any issues fitting it back together. JMHO

Cleaned the carbs last night. Tore them down and gave them a good cleaning. I replaced the needle valve and seat, came with the kit. Replace with new gaskets. They are ready to go on. I don't see any adjusting screws on these big carbs. I will have to look more into that.

Tonight I decided to replace the thermostats. They are located at the base of the motor at the back. Not the easiest place to get at. All went well until I went to remove the last bolt. The top bolt. The easiest bolt to get at. It was jammed in good. I would get a bit of a turn, then would tighten it, then loosen a bit. Back and forth. I normally have luck with sticky bolts but this guy had other plans. It broke, I cried. Okay, not cry, but cursed a bit. Sad thing is , it's deep below the lower cowling. 😫😱

Yeah, hopefully. I just had to walk away from it. lol. Have to think about this one for a bit. And after all that the t-stats in it were okay. 🤔 But I'd rather be sorry on dry land than being on the water somewhere.

So It took just over 4 hours to get that broken bolt out. Tried welding a nut to it on several occasions but would only get a slight turn then break again. So I took the slow road to drill town. lol. Being very careful not to damage the threads. That old bolt was relentless. But was able to tap the threads back to life again. However, I had to cut part of the lower cowl to get at this. I'm not very happy about it but what can ya do. Now I'm hunting for a bolt. I cannot for the life of me find an 1 3/4" bolt. Sheesh.

Some time bolts can be stubborn. Not sure what type 1 3/4" bolt you are looking for, but there are lots of bolt places out there. And if you can't find the exact length, you can always cut one down. But not knowing all the bolt requirements you're looking for, I don't have any other ideas. :noidea:

I've been to a few places here but no luck. I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow to see if they can bring them in. They used what looks like an aluminum bolt.

Do you have a thread size and count? Is it metric or SAE? Those specifications could help. JMHO

So I decided to freshen up the paint on this old Evinrude. It's spent it's life out in the sun and salt water. That has taken it's toll. For this year I'm going to rattle can it, just to make it a bit more appealing. I did the lower unit with what is suppose to be Factory colour. It looks okay but not what I was hoping for. I wanted a little darker.

I ordered in a can of Yamaha Dark blue metallic. That's the wrong way. I thought it was darker.

I did however decide to go white with the prop. I like it.

Nothing wrong with painting her up. When you take the extra steps to make things look good, it shows. Nice job.:thumb:
