Re: Kids can help too!

Vegas,

Nice project you have there! Nice to see the little helpers participating, If nothing else it's comic relief :D

Hi Bret
yeah the wife and kids sure love to get dirty with me! I am lucky because they help keep me motivated :) April is 4 and Ysabella is 3
anyone with kids - involve them! even if it is something simple, like vacumming, they will remember working with you and will cherish it, plus I know I like a handy woman, so my girls will be grease monkeys along with me as long as they want to help....Im not stoppin' em' :)

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration ---- DAY 10 work

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration ---- DAY 10 work

DAY 10 1130am-130pm more general cleanup 2 hours work 105 degrees out:eek:

Hi all
well we didnt get much done over this past weekend, went out on our Glastron to Lake mead kneeboarding and drinking beers and swimming at a sandy beach, then Sunday, recovered from the lake and searched craigslist, well, we found this beauty! a 1961 Glasspar G3 !!! sweet little ride, it is 14 1/2 ft long has a 75hp Evinrude (1961) and came with a second engine (75hp johnson) can't wait to restore this baby!!! towing it home tonight from 50 miles out of Vegas (needed to get tires and rims they were shot) Also scored a nice seat base (12-18inch height adjustable with swivel for $20) thats for our 23' sleekcraft exec. when we redo that.
Man there sure are ALOT of boats that need restoring out there, some are only $100, or free, others $700 etc, there's no reason why anyone can't have a boat!:)

Day 10 work so far 2hrs
cut out the stringers pretty much all the way up to the bow, tore up some more floor, scraped carpet remnants from the fiberglass, used angle grinder and 25 grit flap disc to rough up some areas for fiberglass reinforcements (under drivers and pass console areas, they were pulling away.) going back out there after lunch to do some glassing under the console.

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration project 20 hours x 2 people 40hrs

So far we have around 40 total man hours into this project add 5 more if you included online shopping, picking up boat so 45 total hours and $1250 to this point plus we spent another $200 at basspro shops online so around $1450 invested total so far.
I am sure there would be alot easier refurbs (I've seen em) maybye they would still take a bit to do.

ps here is our Glasspar G3 see Glaspar.jpg it is rusty red looking, the other one is froma brochure see photos
Ill be posting on that one too once we get it in hand

Hi CN, thanks yeah we have 4 now (I never EVER thouoght we would have this many boats, and if I had the room and money we would probably have 4 more! there are plenty of cheap derelict boats here in vegas) this boat stuff is a fun change from being a photographer. Next projects wont have stringer replacment work, picking out better boats to start with (side biz maybye?) hey if theres a few bux and it helps us survive!

Cant wait to work on the G3 project, that one is a keeper at least for a season!

LOL Vegas looks like you caught up to me and then passed me :D. I was up to 4 but sold 1 :D. The new G3 looks sweet . I also understand about lack of work I spent most of July sitting around with no work temps were in the 7's and people were not running their AC much less buying them LOL.

I like the structure you have to work on the boat on the street. I might be further along if I had something like that :)

Keep up the good work and I'll be following along

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider --- restoration transom going in pix

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider --- restoration transom going in pix

Hi Sprintst
that cover is a Ez-up shade, that one is old and heavy duty, the newer ones are a bit flimsy, but still work well, around $75 for a new one on up
the project was moved to the side yard, we just needed the big area out frt for engine removal.
it did rain here the other day, so we used that frame and a 12x20 ft tarp to cover the whole mess, attached it to the side fence and such
now we have some dry area to work and store wood etc. it looks pretty redneck but what the hey, it wont be permanent...

couple pix of transom going in, clamping and layers of resin, wood resin wood, nice and super strong now! this boat has a stringer drive, so there is no weight or outdrive stress on the transom, it is probably better than when new now. 4 layers of resin and cloth over the edges, one over entire transom, extra coats of resin over whole thing, hole for outdrive was resined and clothed also. 2 inches thick, 3 layers 5/8" plywood plus resins

slowly....... reversing the years of neglect.:)

used a die grinder with 80 grit disc to clean up the old fiberglass along the bottom (it had oil and dirt soaked into the top couple millimeters) and to make a rougher surface for the new fiberglass that will go over the stringers
going to use 2x10 fir from home depot for the main stringers since cant get pressure treated lumber in that size dimension. have to cut it down to 2"x8", I would've bought 2x8" lumber but it is only 2x7" actual dimension, GO FIGURE, why wood is not the size they say is beyond me.(2x4s are 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 etc etc)
so had to buy bigger wood and cut it down. it will be sealed in anyways, so shouldn't be a problem for any future owners. least not this decade!

have to work on photos for a client, so no work on boat today atleast until later tonight (monday august 24th). Our daughter Ysabella had her 3rd birthday Sunday, so had a full weekend of other stuff, more posts of stuff soooooooon

got some stuff in via FED EX for the project, blower, bilge, new stern light and base, tow rope, drain plug, anchor rope, safety items and such. waiting for more stuff such as the new bimini, it is like Christmas opening packages!

The upholstery guy dropped off the new back to back seats and the engine cover/jump seats, they look cool! orange and white! we are using pearl orange on the top half of the boat and white gel kote below the bump strip. so these will go perfect.:)
I doubt there will ever be another newman pla-ville built out like this one!

WOW! You're more out of control than I was! I especially like the G3. Glad you liked my GT 150 resto. They are very fun to do (restos) if you dont take them too seriously! (Get out the grinder!). And your photography is amazing. If I ever get out that way (and there is snow), I'll have to get you to shoot my other project HAMMERHEAD SLEDS. www.hammerheadsleds.com I've never been able to find someone to capture the coolness/techyness of what we have. Take care my man and congrats on some cool boats.

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration UPDATE fitting stringers and such

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider restoration UPDATE fitting stringers and such

Thanks EZmobee on the kudos for the seats and Diva those sleds are way cool, gotta have some kahonies to ride one of those down some black diamond slope eh? PS no snow in Vegas! lol except mount charleston (12000 ft peak)

Yeah EZmobee I think the seats came out pretty cool, I wouldn't mind the fitment a bit better, but it is what it is! New Rule - no complaining by me (Mr Blackwell Jr)

UPDATE - got some more prep work done, couple hours more of work etc
cutting the stringer right now (2pm PST Thursday Aug 27th) and it is HOT HOT HOT  OUT 115 degrees again
(is that a complaint from me I sense? ? lol) had to do some trimming to make em fit right as the bottom of the boat where the stringers rest wasn't quite flat, more of a convex shape lower in the middle by 1/4 inch than at the ends. also had to use 2x10s cut down to about 8" high, still got to notch out the part in the engine compartment where it drops down to motor mount level (our boat has a stepped design in that area) like a stair kinda
that was a pain.

going back out into the brutal heat right now, to dry fit it again (just cooling down while I type) going to dry fit all the wood before glassing anything in and laying the floor plywood. It would be sweet to have plywood laid in the next couple days.

this heat is great for boating, not for working on em!

see pix attached--------------- yes the most proper way wouldve been to remove all foam and start from scratch, but at my estimate that is $400 dollars worth of pour in foam! it is staying! we used a bread knife to cut it level and plumb / true as it had some bulges and blowouts from the original manufacturer.

SCORED a FREEBIE my brother in law gave me 6 cans of industrial expansive foam for Au Gratis, Thanks Steve! we will use that to fill the voids near the transom and anywhere else.

Re: 1978 Newman 18' Pla-Ville bowrider resto DAYs 11 / 12 UPDATE new photos/parts $$$

DAY 11 Aug 24th 2009 was putting in the transom, took all day about 8 hours plus $60 cost in foam for seats lots of breaks, 3 layers of cloth around edges and one across entire transom
see earlier post, also cut out new wood bases for the front bow area seats, cooler cover and storage locker. Cut out the foam used 2" high density foam from Joann Fabrics, stuff is pricey! $20 a yard, and that is only 22" wide material, add in another $60 for foam used 1/2" plywood priced in earlier. Gave those to the upholstery guy to wrap in vinyl.

DAY 12 Wed Aug 26th 2009 = 1 hour of work - Final finish work done on transom opening glassed in the transom opening, it looks a bit crooked in the pics but it is straight. Gooped some resin where the stringers will go (near the back, motor area) so they have somewhere to rest, general cleanup on the foam that was bulged in a few spots used a bread knife and a level. once the transom opening dried, used a die grinder and sanding disc to clean up the edges , resin build ups etc.

We cut the stringers and crossmember pieces, dry fit it all. man it was hot out, sweated ALOT. You would think it would take 5 minutes but it doesn't! :-( see newest pics link below (around 40 of em) http://www.lasvegaspix.com/projects/newman6/

Had to run to home depot for some more wood too, another $22 in cost
got a bunch of stuff via UPS, transom seal (outdrive to transom) water pump kit, seal kit, new 3 bow bimini top (it was supposed to be tan but, looks pretty much like off white or very light tan) seloc manual for OMC

Bass Pro bit me too. My last stop was a whole bunch of odds and ends...which I needed...just not right now. They are in a big box ready to go at some point this fall.

Keep up the good work in spite of the crazy heat.

ROTFLMA
nice, yeah its a little thicker than the mulch we pulled out thats for sure.
and it's an omc stringer boat so no pressure on that area.

We are going to finally resin in the stringers and such today:D. Spent couple hours friday (DAY 14) dorking around with some crossmember pieces and wood parts for under the bowrider area. also had to re-cut 2 pieces in the eng area. Almost made a boo boo and made the engine area a bit too narrow (3" rest area for the eng mounts instead of 4 1/4" wide) that is fixed now, went back and looked at my original measurements. Good thing I wrote something down!

The wife tinkered with some of that duplicolor vinyl spray paint on our sleekcraft 23ft. We are waiting for outdrive parts for that boat from Dave @ Hurrikain, chrysler 300 I/O so we dont want to invest much $$$ in it until we take her out on the water and see what she's about. Came out real nice! if you have decent vinyl but dirty looking sun damaged it cleans it up awsome.
Rickairmedic said he has some that lasted years using it.

Found a website that sells Polygard gel coat with and without wax additive for $47 per gallon.
http://stores.infinityfrp.com/-strse-CHEMICALS-&-MORE-cln-Gel-Coat/Categories.bok
it would be nicel to gelcoat the bottom of this pea green Newman and have it turn out decent.
